Is Your Pet Covered By Travel Insurance, Asks Squaremouth

A recent survey done by the U.S. Department of Transportation shows over 18 percent of U.S. adult leisure travelers usually take their pets with them when they travel. Unfortunately, most travel insurance providers will not offer pet coverage to those travelers. If travelers want coverage for their pets, they should look for the few travel insurance providers that recognize household pets as important members of the family.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, over two million pets are transported by air every year in the United States. If a cat or dog is traveling with its owner, and becomes sick or injured during the trip, Travelex Insurance Services’ Travel Max policy, will cover the policy holder’s pet up to $1,000 in emergency medical treatment. If the pet owner is ill or injured, and unable to take care of the pet because of hospitalization, the Travel Max policy will pay up to $10,000 to return the pet back home. However, once the animal is home, fees to board the pet until the owner returns are not covered.

CSA Travel Protection offers a similar service called Pet Return. If an emergency makes it impossible for a traveler to care for a pet that is traveling with them, CSA will arrange a safe trip home. Unlike Travelex’s Travel Max policy with a flat coverage of up to $10,000, CSA’s coverage falls under the policy limit for Trip Cancellation and Travel Delay. Although coverage amount varies from one policy to the next, it will cover boarding fees until the owner returns home.

CSA also offers a Pet Service Locator that helps travelers find pet-related services during their trip. "We wanted to make sure that our travelers could count on us to help them with all their needs while traveling with their pet. As part of our concierge service, we can help you find what you’re looking for, whether it’s a fine dining restaurant or a veterinarian. We understand that pets are part of the family," says Kathy Townend, CSA’s Marketing Manager.

Even if the family pet is not traveling with it’s insured owner, Travel Insured International offers Pet Care Coverage through its Worldwide Trip Protector and Worldwide Trip Protector Gold plans.

“Your poodle is stuck in a Chicago kennel while you are stuck in a Paris hospital. Pet Care coverage will pay her boarding costs for a few more days,” explains Kevin Herlihy, National Account Manager for Travel Insured.

The plans will cover up to $50 a day in additional pet boarding fees up to a $300 limit. Travelex’s Travel Select policy with the Family Lifestyle Pak Upgrade will also cover additional pet boarding fees around $25 a day.
