TRUMP-AYOTTE BACKED MEDICAID CUTS LEAVE THIRTEEN RURAL NEW HAMPSHIRE HOSPITALS AT RISK OF CLOSING
States News Service
The following information was released by the New Hampshire Democratic Party:
A new report paints a "grim financial picture" for New Hampshire's thirteen rural hospitals that have "long been under financial stress" and are facing "steep headwinds." Inadequate payments from health insurance plans, coupled with "drastic cutbacks in Medicaid," both at the state and federal levels, have left rural New Hampshire hospitals and thousands of patients in limbo.
More than 46,000 Granite Staters are slated to lose Medicaid coverage because of Donald Trump's Big, Ugly Bill. Republicans' ongoing refusal to extend expiring ACA enhanced premium tax credits means that nearly 48,000 Granite Staters will see their premiums more than double on average. Experts warn that the "financial consequences of these changes are mounting," and "will further destabilize an already challenging rural health system."
New Hampshire hospitals are already facing steep revenue deficits, with seven hospitals across the state, including four rural access hospitals, operating at a loss in 2024. Because rural hospitals typically "serve a higher percentage of Medicaid patients than other hospitals," looming cuts to Medicaid both by Donald Trump and Kelly Ayotte "remain very worrisome" for both employers and patients at hospitals across the state.
"Our rural hospitals are on the brink of financial collapse thanks to the Republican health care crisis," said NHDP Chair Ray Buckley. "No one should be more ashamed of themselves than every single Republican, including Donald Trump and Kelly Ayotte, who believe Granite Staters are better off without access to life-saving care. This is political negligence with real human costs."
