THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS HAWAI'I'S ENACTMENT OF SB 3045, EXPANDING ACCESS TO CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORS

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) applauds Hawaii Governor Josh Green for signing SB 3045 into law, a significant step toward expanding access to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for people living with diabetes across Hawai'i.

The new law requires health insurance plans, including Medicaid managed care plans, to provide coverage for CGMs, helping ensure more consistent access to this evidence-based diabetes technology. By establishing more uniform coverage requirements, the law aims to improve diabetes management, reduce administrative roadblocks, and help prevent costly diabetes-related complications.

"Continuous glucose monitors have transformed diabetes care by providing real-time glucose data that empowers people with diabetes and their healthcare professionals to make informed treatment decisions," said Christine Fallabel, the ADA's managing director of state government affairs. "The ADA applauds Governor Green and the Hawai'i Legislature for recognizing the importance of access to this lifesaving technology. This law will help improve health outcomes while reducing unnecessary healthcare costs over time."

Research consistently demonstrates that CGMs improve glycemic management, reduce episodes of hypoglycemia, and support earlier clinical intervention for people living with diabetes. Expanding coverage also helps reduce disparities in access, particularly for residents of Hawaii's smaller islands, where specialty diabetes care may be less accessible.

The ADA remains committed to working alongside state leaders, healthcare professionals, advocates, and people living with diabetes to ensure everyone has access to the tools and care they need to live healthier lives.
