Oct. 21--Disaster deadline extended

RALEIGH -- The U.S. Department of Labor has extended the filing deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance for 28 counties in North Carolina, including Moore, until Oct. 31. Workers who became unemployed as a direct result of the effects of Hurricane Florence may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. Business owners affected by the storm may also qualify. Criteria includes:

* Individuals who are unemployed due to the disaster, and do not qualify for regular unemployment insurance benefits.

* Self-employed individuals and small business owners who lost income due to the disaster.

* Individuals who were prevented from working due to an injury caused by the disaster.

* Individuals who have become the major supplier of household income due to the disaster-related death of the previous major supplier of household income.

* Individuals who are unable to reach their jobs or self-employment locations, because they must travel through the affected area and are prevented from doing so by the disaster.

* Individuals who were to commence employment or self-employment, but were prevented from doing so by the disaster.

File online at des.nc.gov. Individuals will need their Social Security number, copies of their most recent federal income tax forms or check stubs, or documentation to support they were working or self-employed when the disaster occurred.

Carolina Farm election results in

STATESVILLE -- Two area people were among the Carolina Farm Credit members elected to serve. They are E. Bernard Beck of Seagrove and Mary Beth Jackson of Moore County. Beck is a full-time farmer whose operation consists of hay and a cow/calf operation. He serves on the Randolph County Voluntary Agricultural District Board and is a member of the Randolph County Livestock and Poultry Improvement Association and the N.C. Agribusiness Council. He is also a member of Oakley Baptist Church. Jackson was elected to serve on the 2019 Nominating Committee, Region 5.

PTRC summit set for Nov. 1

HIGH POINT -- The Piedmont Triad Regional Council will present the Second Annual Piedmont Triad Tomorrow Summit on Thursday, Nov. 1, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at High Point University, 1 University Parkway. Sessions include:

* Housing for tomorrow's workforce.

* Conservation and the outdoor recreation economy.

* Winning workforce strategies.

The summit will be followed by "The State of the Region" from 4-6 p.m.

SECU holds annual meeting

RALEIGH -- The State Employees' Credit Union held its 2018 Annual Membership Meeting in Greensboro recently, welcoming nearly 1,000 member-owners who attended in support of their financial cooperative. The function began with an educational luncheon featuring a fireside chat with Credit Union executives who spoke on financial abuse and scams targeting older adults. Following the luncheon, Phil Gwoke entertained with his informative and humorous presentation on generational differences and strategies to bridge the communication divides. The day concluded with a General Membership Meeting where Bob Brinson, James Johnson, McKinley Wooten Jr. and Dr. Stefanie Williams were re-elected to SECU's Board of Directors.
