Robinson Certified as Associate in Risk Management-ERM

AMHERST, Mass., Feb. 28 -- The University of Massachusetts's Amherst campus issued the following news release:

Donald Robinson, executive director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), has completed requirements for certification as an Associate in Risk Management-ERM.

The ERM designation applies to enterprise- or institution-wide risk management.

"To my knowledge I am the first person across the entire UMass system that has achieved this certification.," Robinson said. "This is the most sought after designation for folks working in the field of higher education risk management."

Robinson said that nationally there is a shift in risk management from insurance to the broader field of institutional risk management, which encompasses a range of risks including financial, operational, hazard, legal and reputational.

"Mitigation of hazards is the focus, as opposed to responding to incidents, although we still do that," he said.

"My motivation in striving for this credential was to be more knowledgeable in strategically positioning EH&S to better support the campus efforts that are underway to address the broad areas of risk management," he said.

The certification requires a program of self-study and four examinations administered by the Institutes Risk and Insurance Knowledge Group.
