Prep spotlight: Hacke's homer lifts Cyclones past Tornadoes

Apr. 22—BUFFALO — Carley Hacke smacked a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School held on for an 8-6 win over Buffalo Tri-City in nonconference softball action on Wednesday.

Rosie Bartletti drew a one-out hit-by-pitch. Two batters later, Hacke went to center field for the go-ahead runs.

Hacke was 2-for-5 for the Cyclones. Bartletti was 1-for-2 with a home run, was hit by pitches twice, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases.

SHG took a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning before the Tornadoes answered back with three in the bottom of the fifth.

Tri-City's Grace Blair led off with a single then Jordan Closs drew a walk ahead of another walk to Kenzie Krider to load the bases. Daleny Chumbley then singled to left to score Blair and Closs. Krider scored on the next play — an error — for the tying run.

Bartletti pitched all nine innings for the win. She struck out nine, allowed six runs — five earned — on 12 hits and four walks. She allowed just two extra-base hits, including a home run to Emma Farley.

Closs threw the final four innings for the Tornadoes and took the loss. She struck out for and allowed two runs on two hits and no walks.

Late rally falls short for Williamsville

EAST PEORIA — Trailing by six runs in the top of the seventh inning, a Williamsville rally only got half of the necessary runs in a 6-3 nonconference loss to East Peoria at the EastSide Centre.

Williamsville's Hattie Bond went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including driving in Maddie Roberts with two outs in the seventh. Roberts went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double.

Kierston Osborne picked up the win for the Raiders with a six-inning outing where she allowed seven hits, three runs — one earned — and struck out seven.

Hardin sparks, finishes Tornadoes' rally

Taylorville first baseman Anna Hardin got Taylorville on the board then added an insurance run in the final inning as the Tornadoes beat Springfield High 6-4 in a nonconference game.

Hardin drove in two with an RBI double in the top of the third inning to cut Springfield's lead to 3-2. She drove in Morgan Wright with an infield groundout in the top of the seventh.

Wright allowed seven hits, four runs, three walks and struck out two for the win. She was also productive at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and a run scored. Callie Havara was 3-for-3 for the Tornadoes.

Skylar Wantland went 2-for-2 with a double for the Senators. Samantha Magalis drove in two with an RBI single.

Alaina Elberson took the loss for Springfield, allowing 10 hits, four earned runs and one walk while striking out seven.

BASEBALL

Hendricks, Panthers outdo Staunton

GIRARD — Matthew Hendricks made a strong statement for a no designated-hitter rule in high school, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored as well as the win, allowing six hits, two runs — one earned — and striking out four for North Mac in a 12-2 victory against Staunton in six innings.

The Panthers forced four errors and drew five walks while cranking out 11 hits. Cole Hatalla went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Riley Flowers went 0-for-2 with two runs scored on two walks.

Cayden Silvester took the loss for Staunton with three strikeouts in two innings. He allowed four hits and one run. Caden Shearlock went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs, driving in Kyle Favre with a triple.

Crowe leads SHG past Central

Nick Crowe allowed just two hits and two walks in a five-inning complete game to help Sacred Heart-Griffin beat Champaign Central 10-0.

Crowe struck out seven and needed just 66 pitches for the shutout.

Nolan Healey and Sam Antonacci each had two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones' offense. Antonacci doubled and had a sacrifice fly.

Crowe and Ryan Soehnlin also had two hits apiece for SHG.

Pretzels pounce on Crusaders

NEW BERLIN — Jacob Roberts drove in three runs from the leadoff spot for New Berlin, setting the table for a 14-1 win in five innings against Lutheran.

The Pretzels' pitchers dodged 10 walks by giving up only two hits. Trevor Colwell allowed one hit and one earned run in his two-inning start and struck out three and walked five in his victory.

Clifton McGrady and Jared Andrews had the only Lutheran hits.

Plains outslugs Morrisonville

MORRISONVILLE — Aiden Hamerlinck went 5-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs scored for Pleasant Plains as the Cardinals beat Morrisonville 13-10 at Memorial Field.

Morrisonville had a 6-2 lead after scoring four in the first and two in the second. The Mohawks' Michael Jones helped the cause going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Plains rattled out six runs in the top of the third inning and three in the fourth to jump ahead 11-8. Cannon Greer had three hits, a run scored, and drove in a run. Mason Willams scored twice with two hits — including a triple — for the Cardinals.

Plains threw five arms at Morrisonville, with Kaleb Butcher recording the win. He threw 2 2/3 innings, allowed three hits, two runs — one earned — and four strikeouts.

VOLLEYBALL

Borntreger, Bergschneiders lead Crusaders past Trojans

Erin Borntreger had nine kills to lead Lutheran to a 25-23, 25-14 win over Auburn in a nonconference tilt on Wednesday.

Paige Bergschneider led the Crusaders (15-2) in assists with 25 and padded her night with seven digs and one block. Kaleigh Bergschneider contributed with seven kills, six digs and one block while teammate Anna Schlayhan finished with seven digs.

Kylie Mackenzie led Auburn with five kills while Maty Dambacher led the Trojans with 12 assists.

IN OTHER NEWS: Jacksonville Routt advanced to 11-2 and a perfect 9-0 in the Western Illinois Valley Conference by defeating Pleasant Hill 25-11, 25-8. TORI FELLHAUER led the Rockets with 10 kills and three blocks and added five digs. MAKENNA BAPTIST had 22 assists and five aces. . . . MADDIE BYERS had 11 assists and three aces for Pawnee in a three-set loss to Moweaqua Central A&M, 21-25, 25-7, 22-25. JORDAN WATTS added five kills and two blocks for Pawnee.

GIRLS SOCCER

Carrell's surpasses a hat trick in SHS win

Emma Carrell had the hat trick to give Springfield High a 3-0 lead then added a fourth goal in the Senators' 6-1 nonconference win over Williamsville.

McKenna Lambert and Lila Ambrose had the other goals for the Senators (2-0). Maddie Foster had two assists for SHS, which has outscored its first two opponents 13-1, both from the Sangamo Conference.

Laura Romence had the Bullets' lone score.
