Police plan roadside checkpoints through September
Muskogee Phoenix (OK)
Sep. 14--Muskogee Police Department will hold random roadside checkpoints at various intersections throughout town through September, according to a press release from Public Information Officer Lynn Hamlin.
"The City of Muskogee has a very high vehicle accident rate when compared per capita to other cities in Oklahoma," Hamlin wrote. "The objective of the roadside safety checks is to deter and/or identify persons operating motor vehicles that do not have a valid driver's license, have unsafe equipment, do not have valid insurance verification or are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol."
The idea, Hamlin said, was to combat one of the factors attributed to the high accident rate.
"So many times it's someone with no insurance or someone with a suspended driver's license or no license that causes an accident, and that's one of things the checkpoint checks for," Hamlin said.
