Letter to the editor: Wrong 'new world' of caregiving for relatives
Bakersfield Californian, The (CA)
No doubt everything Froma Harrop says in her op-ed of May 10 is totally true. However, she didn't begin to cover the full scope of her topic — at least for Bakersfield residents.
Also, she was very reactive in her comments concerning this critical need for caregiving to elders.
She displays her myopia in her conclusion that “Americans of modest wealth wanting a dignified old-person future must save, cut off luxury spending, pay off debts. Now!”
She completely overlooks proactive solutions available to us such as Long Term Care Insurance and, in our case, at least 95 assisted living facilities in Bakersfield alone! Admittedly, a few are costly but most are not.
Here are proactive steps to consider:
1. Proactively collect data on LTC iInsurance from multiple sources.
2. Proactively begin review of local assisted living facilities. The internet should be a good initial resource. Jot down those that look good for your future needs.
3. Go ahead and enjoy your “luxury spending” and service your debts on schedule.
Now, you are in control!
At the same time, be thankful so many well-trained caregivers are available whenever and wherever you may need them in the future.
