Ex-Grizzlie Allen arrested, pleads not guilty in NBA health care fraud scheme

Former Memphis Grizzlies guard Tony Allen was arrested and arraigned in a New York federal court on Tuesday after being charged with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud.
According to court documents reviewed by The Commercial Appeal, Allen pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance after paying a $500,000 bond. He had to also surrender his travel documents and his travel has been restricted to both the Southern and Eastern District of New York, the Western District of Tennessee and the Central District of California.
Allen is one of 18 former NBA players charged Oct. 7 in a multi-million dollar health insurance fraud scheme involving the NBA's Health and Welfare Benefit Plan. His wife Desiree was also charged and arrested but has yet to be arraigned. Former Memphis Tigers All-American Chris Douglas-Roberts was also among those charged but has not been arrested or been arraigned according to court documents.
The initial status conferences in the case will be held after Oct. 25 in New York.
