City opts out of terrorism premium in insurance renewal
Claremore Daily Progress (OK)
June 10--When given the choice to add a terrorism premium in their insurance policy renewal, the City of Claremore opted out.
The renewal option was presented by Dave Burrows of Burrows Insurance and while the terrorism premium was listed on the agenda item, it was the last thing to be discussed.
First, Burrows talked about insurance claims to be filed this year.
"We had a $96,892 claim at the water plant, it was a lightning strike. The biggest claims we've had have been at the water plant, outside of the Expo Center," Burrows said, adding that the scheduled upgrade and replacement of dated equipment at the water plant will help reduce the number of future claims.
Burrows said another claim, roughly $40,000, will be coming from the Claremore Recreation Center soon.
City Manager Jim Thomas broached the subject first, "You've got the renewal with and without terrorism premiums? Have we had this in the past?"
Burrows said the city has not had the terrorism premium included in their policy for at least the last few years.
"It's not only national, but also international. So the Murrah Building, for example, was a local act of terrorism and that's something this would cover," Burrows said.
With no discussion about the premium, a motion was made to approve the insurance renewal without the terrorism premium. With a quick second, and all votes in favor, the motion passed.
