Top prospects, teams fill Coaches vs. Cancer tourney

Nov. 22--The Cypress Bay Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament tips off on Friday, giving an early season look at top boys' basketball state contenders and financial help for cancer research.

Reigning Class 6A state champion Norland, rising Class 8A power McArthur, Class 3A 2012-13 state runner-up Coral Springs Christian and private school power Tampa Oldsmar Christian highlight the nine game schedule on Friday and Saturday.

The two year Tournament, which was started by Lightning boys basketball coach Jason Looky, also includes three girls' soccer matches.

All proceeds go the American Cancer Society.

A battle of top senior guards unfolds Friday night at 8:15 when Miami Norland, led by Class 6A 2012-13 Final Four MVP Zach Johnson, ranked No. 13 in the 2014 class by by SourceHoops.com faces Oldsmar Christian's Troy Holston, ranked No. 14.

On Saturday McArthur's dynamic backcourt tandem of Derric Jean and Majestic Tejada leads the Mustangs against North Broward Prep at 11:30 a.m. before Northeast's sharp-shooting duo of Richard Lee and Corey Mendez get their shot at Holston and Oldsmar Christian at 3 p.m.

Coral Springs Christian 6-7 swingman Alaowei Talent and freshman star Jeffrey Prophete join forces against Miami High while Cypress Bay's emerging point guard prospect Ross Udine leads the Lightning against Miami Columbus at 8:15.

With the win, Everglades improves to 2-0-4.

-- Monarch 1, Taravella 0: Behind a Kevian Ferraz goal Monarch got past Taravella.

Cristian Medina assisted Ferraz on the game-winning goal while Tyler Johnson recorded 12 saves and a shutout in goal.

Monarch is now 6-1-1.

GIRLS' SOCCER

--University School 3, Calvary Christian 1: Madiya Harriott netted two goals to propel University past Calvary Christian.

Stephanie Perry added a goal as insurance for the Suns.

Bea Blanco netted the lone goal for Calvary.

With the loss, Calvary drops to 3-2-2.

-- American Heritage 6, Archbishop McCarthy 1: Melanie Monteagudo netted three goals to lead American Heritage past the McCarthy.

Dejah Cason added a goal and an assist. Martha Tomas netted two goals and recorded an assist.

Mickeala Kopecki found herself on the helping side of half of the goals scored as she dished out three assists.

Yari Bradfield scored the lone Mavericks goal.

The Patriots improve to 11-0 while the Mavericks, who entered the game undefeated, dropped to 11-1.

-- Mourning 7, Northeast 0: Angelica Gurevich and Delmy Brooks netted three goals apiece to lead Mourning past Northeast.

Belen Farias added a goal for Mourning.

The Sharks improve to to 4-1-1.
