TDI Conference Focuses on Fighting Insurance Fraud

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 11 -- The Texas Department of Insurance issued the following news release:

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) has opened registration for its 16th Annual Fraud Conference. The conference is designed for law enforcement and special investigators combating insurance fraud. The conference will be held April 29-May 1, 2014, at the Austin Convention Center. A reduced rate of $199 is available for conference attendees who register on or before March 21, 2014.

"Insurance fraud has a costly impact on all consumers," said Commissioner of Insurance Julia Rathgeber. "The professionals in law enforcement who fight fraud on the front lines are performing a valuable public service, and it is my pleasure to invite them to TDI's 16th Annual Fraud Conference."

The conference's distinguished panelists and speakers include business leaders, investigators, prosecutors, and industry experts. Keynote speaker for the three-day conference is author Walter Pavlo, whose story addresses the manipulation of financial records within WorldCom Inc. Pavlo will provide his perspective of the inner workings and motivations associated with complex white-collar crimes, with an emphasis on ethical decision making.

"We are very excited about the level of training that will be included in this year's conference," said Neftali Carrasquillo Jr., associate commissioner of TDI's Fraud Unit. "To combat fraud, it is essential that we invest the time to understand the dynamic of the fraud activity in the market. With this knowledge, law enforcement, investigators, and insurers can work collectively to fight back."

The workshop sessions at this year's conference will fulfill up to 16 continuing education hours for professionals seeking additional coursework for active certifications, such as certified fraud examiners, law enforcement officers, insurance professionals, and attorneys.
