WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 -- The U.S. Attorney for the District of Nebraska issued the following news release:
United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced that William Paul Bouda, 41, of Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced on December 19, 2011, in Omaha, Nebraska, to six months in prison by United States District Judge Laurie Smith Camp following his conviction for mail fraud. In addition to his prison term, Bouda will serve 2 years of supervised release following his release from prison.
Bouda was indicted by federal grand jury in April of 2011 and charged with engaging in a fraud scheme against his former employer, Zurich American Insurance Company. Bouda falsified an insurance claim file in an effort to cause the insurance company to issue a check for $160,000 payable to a judgment creditor of a former client of Boudas from his days as a private practice attorney. Bouda was caught after the Chicago law firm to whom Bouda sent the check contacted a Zurich American Insurance Company manager to determine the legitimacy of the check. The inquiry triggered an investigation which resulted in a determination that the check had been fraudulently issued based on false representations by Bouda. Because the check was determined to have been fraudulently issued it was not negotiated and Boudas conduct did not result in any losses.
This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service.
