Truck crashes into US Cellular’s Phone Zone

May 17--Saturday afternoon a routine day at US Cellular in Durant was interrupted by a black pickup crashing into the building. April Drake was making a payment on her phone service while Kevin Buttry was taking that payment. They were just inches from the truck as it plowed through the plate glass window. Buttry went to the emergency room while Drake was left with bruises. The US Cellular offices at Main Street and 21st were damaged so bad, the stores had to close.

A female driver of a black pickup said her foot got stuck on the accelerator instead of the brake. She had just pulled out of the drive thru at Jack in the Box when the accident occurred.

She passed a field sobriety test but was ticketed for inattentive driving.

Damage is estimated to be approximately $100,000. US Cellular and Farmer's Insurance/New You Spa offices are both housed in the same building. US Cellular is the only locally owned phone company in Durant. It is also known by most in Durant as "The Phone Zone."

Buttry said he's glad to be alive. He doesn't think the ticket the driver received from police is enough. But he said about the truck barely missing him, "it wasn't our time to go."

Cindy McDaniel, owner of phone zone said, "we will open as soon as the building is safe for our customers. We want to thank our customers, our team and the driver of the truck. It is awesome to see strangers jump in to help those who needed it. We are very thankful no one was seriously injured or killed. The Lord was watching out for those in the building that day."
