The Kansas Department of Insurance recently released its 2025 Complaint Index, showing the department closed more than 3,000 complaints involving automobile, health, homeowners and renters, life, annuities and long-term care insurance.
The department's Consumer Assistance Division helped Kansas consumers recover nearly $29 million in 2025, a 147% increase from the amount recovered in 2024.
Sumner County residents received assistance with 25 complaints within the department's jurisdiction last year. Those included eight accident and health complaints, ten automobile complaints and seven homeowners complaints.
The department's assistance resulted in $8,242 being recovered for Sumner County residents in 2025, compared with $107,158 recovered in 2024.
"Complaints and inquiries equip the Department to hold insurance companies accountable and better serve Kansans," said Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt.
The Department of Insurance uses complaints to help identify insurance companies or agents that may need to be investigated for possible violations of Kansas insurance laws or regulations. The information is also used to identify topics for public education efforts.
Kansas consumers who are having trouble with an insurance claim, company or agent can contact the Kansas Department of Insurance Consumer Assistance Division at 785-296-3071 or kdoi.complaints@ks.gov. Information and assistance are also available at insurance.kansas.gov.
