The Latest: Kuwait’s emir to visit White House next week

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump's executive order on retirement security (all times local):

8 p.m.

President Donald Trump and the ruling emir of Kuwait will meet at the White House after Labor Day.

The White House says Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the ruling emir of the U.S.-allied nation, will be welcomed to the White House on Sept. 5 for a working visit.

The 89-year-old ruler of the oil-rich nation is leading a Kuwaiti delegation to the U.S. to discuss trade, investment and security cooperation.

5:35 p.m.

President Donald Trump says the prospect of a North Carolina drawing new districts weeks ahead of the November midterm election is "unfair."

Speaking at a fundraiser for a pair of GOP candidates in Charlotte, Trump says, "I think it's unfair with this whole redistricting thing they're doing in North Carolina."

A panel of federal judges Monday struck down the state's congressional map, saying Republican state legislators went too far using political data to preserve GOP-held seats.

The judges raised the possibility of redrawing the districts by mid-September so they could be used in November elections, or at least before the next session of Congress is seated in January.

Republicans are objecting to the plan, which comes as they are fighting to defend their control of the House of Representatives.

5:20 p.m.

President Donald Trump is raising money for two Republican congressional candidates in North Carolina, as he seeks to help the GOP defend control of Congress.

Trump is addressing about 300 people at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte on behalf of for GOP congressional candidates Rep. Ted Budd and Mark Harris. Funds are also benefiting the state's Republican Party and the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Trump is warning that Democrats have "some really bad people that are running for office," and says that if they retake control Congress, Democrats will roll back the GOP's 2017 tax law and other accomplishments.

The NRCC says the event is raising $750,000.

4 p.m.

President Donald Trump will visit France, Ireland, Argentina and Colombia later this year.

The White House said Friday that Trump will travel to Paris for a Nov. 11 event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of World War I. Trump will also visit Ireland "to renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations."

Trump will attend the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, later in November. He will also visit Colombia to discuss "security, counter narcotics, and regional affairs."

The White House says Trump has asked Vice President Mike Pence to travel to Singapore in November for the United States-Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and the East Asia Summit. He will then go to Papua New Guinea to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.

3:45 p.m.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing federal agencies to make it easier for small businesses to group together to provide their workers with retirement plans.

The White House says the order directs the Labor and Treasury departments to issue regulations to help businesses join together to offer Association Retirement Plans. Administration officials say high costs discourage employers from offering plans like 401(k)s at a time when surveys show workers worried about being able to live comfortably in retirement.

Trump claims that as a result of the order, retirement plans "will now be available to more Americans than ever before."

He will appear later Friday at a fundraiser for GOP congressional candidates Mark Harris and Rep. Ted Budd.

3:15 p.m.

President Donald Trump says he's going to "study" a federal employee wage freeze, amid criticism of his Thursday order preventing an increase to most civilian federal workers.

Speaking Friday on retirement savings in Charlotte, N.C., Trump says, "I'm going to study that over the weekend," calling it a fitting issue to explore over the Labor Day holiday. The White House is not immediately explaining Trump's comment.

Trump announced Thursday he was nixing a 2.1 percent across-the-board raise for most workers effective in January, as well as separate locality pay increases averaging 25.7 percent. He cited the need to put the nation "on a fiscally sustainable course."

The president last year signed a package of tax cuts that is forecast to add about $1.5 trillion to federal deficits over 10 years.

3:10 p.m.

President Donald Trump is making fresh complaints about "dishonest reporting" after his private comments about critical trade negotiations with Canada were published.

Trump says Friday on Twitter: "Wow, I made OFF THE RECORD COMMENTS to Bloomberg concerning Canada, and this powerful understanding was BLATANTLY VIOLATED. Oh well, just more dishonest reporting. I am used to it. At least Canada knows where I stand!"

Trump criticized Canada during an Oval Office interview Thursday with Bloomberg News, and his comments were published Friday by the Toronto Star — the deadline for the U.S. and Canada to reach agreement. The U.S. and Mexico have already agreed to terms of a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement.

A White House spokeswoman says the U.S. and Canada continue to work toward a deal.

2:35 p.m.

President Donald Trump has arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, to sign an executive order on retirement security and headline a fundraiser for Republican candidates.

Administration officials say Trump will direct the Labor and Treasury departments to issue regulations to help small businesses pool together to provide retirement plans for their workers.

They say high costs discourage such employers from offering 401(k)s and other plans at a time when surveys show workers worry about being able to live comfortably in retirement.

Before he returns to Washington, Trump will raise money for GOP congressional candidates Rep. Ted Budd and Mark Harris, as well as North Carolina's Republican Party and the National Republican Congressional Committee. The NRCC says the event is expected to draw 300 people and raise $750,000.
