You Could Be Losing Up to 20% of Your Commissions Each Year
Why commission management may be the most overlooked growth lever in your business.
Production drives BGAs, IMOs, and agencies, and most focus almost exclusively on sales. Svyatoslav “Slava” Isayev, Founder and CEO of GreenWave Commissions, warns that this focus is costing firms more than they realize.
“Everyone is told to focus on sales, sales, sales,” says Isayev. “But if you’re not tracking and validating your commissions, you’re missing a significant portion of the revenue you already earned.”
GreenWave’s analysis is based on real-world scale. The platform processes more than $6.4 billion in commissions annually, tied to over $108 billion in premiums across life, annuity, health, and disability lines.
GreenWave identified an average commission error rate of 18.3% of revenue, rising to over 20% in 2025.
“If you’re a $10 million business, that’s $1.8 to $2 million,” Isayev explains. “You’re putting in all the effort to sell, and 20% of that goes to someone else. That’s not a small problem.”
The Hidden Cost of “Good Enough”
The issue isn’t negligence, it’s visibility. Most firms don’t know what they’re missing.
Once organizations exceed a few hundred policies a year, commissions become hard to verify across multiple carriers, layered compensation, renewals, overrides, and exceptions.
“If you don’t have a system that shows your expectation versus what you actually received, you’re just trusting the numbers,” says Isayev. “And that’s where the leakage happens.”
Many firms still rely on spreadsheets, PDFs, and fragmented systems to manage commissions. Seventy to 80% of BGAs are managing commissions by hand.
“Manual work breeds errors,” he says. “Not because people aren’t doing their jobs, but because there’s only so much a human can process. At some point, shortcuts happen. You check a few lines instead of thousands. And that’s where money slips through.”
From Bottleneck to Growth Engine
GreenWave was built to rethink commission management as a strategic function, not a back-office task.
Isayev’s journey started when he helped an agency that was buried under manual processing. “They had 25 people doing commissions and couldn’t grow,” he recalls. “Two years after implementing our system, they tripled in size and reduced that team to two, redeploying everyone else to support agents and drive revenue.”
That philosophy still defines GreenWave today: automate the tedious, help clients, and turn commissions into a lever for growth.
“Our goal was simple,” says Isayev. “Automate everything from start to finish and give companies a system that solves real problems, not theoretical ones.”
Why Most Systems Fall Short
Many platforms offer commission tools, but most fall short.
“Most systems solve about 80% of the problem,” he explains. “But that’s the easy 80%. The real work, the time-consuming and risky part, is in the exceptions. That’s the 20% we focus on.”
GreenWave handles complex compensation structures, edge cases, and evolving business needs, and it doesn’t stop at software.
“You can’t separate technology from process,” says Isayev. “That’s why we combine automation with done-for-you services. We don’t just give you a tool. We make sure it works in your environment.”
That approach scales from small agencies to enterprises processing millions of policies, while adapting quickly as needs change.
“If a client has a unique compensation structure, we can build and deploy it in 24 hours,” he adds. “That flexibility is critical in this business.”
The “Aha Moment”
Clients realize the value immediately. “They’ll see an error flagged and assume the system is wrong,” says Isayev. “Then they investigate and realize we’re right. And it keeps happening. That’s when it clicks: ‘We’ve been missing this for years.’”
One firm found $500,000 in underpaid commissions in a one-time audit. Another commission manager went from 60-hour weeks to a few half-days, with the system handling data entry and validation.
“We’re not replacing people,” Isayev emphasizes. “We’re elevating them from data processors to commission auditors.”
A Competitive Advantage Hiding in Plain Sight
The takeaway is clear: commission management isn’t just operational; it’s strategic.
“If your agents are calling about commissions, if it takes days to answer simple questions, or if you can’t clearly see what you’ve earned, that’s a red flag,” says Isayev.
For those who get it right, the upside is significant: cleaner data, faster payouts, captured revenue, and a better agent experience.
Looking ahead, Isayev expects even greater transformation as automation and AI advance.
“The future is full visibility,” he says. “From production to expected revenue to actual payouts, all in one place. When you have that, you’re not guessing anymore. You’re running your business with confidence.”
If you have 10 or more agents, GreenWave is right for you. Reclaim your commissions.
