Schakowsky Statement on the Trump Administration’s intent to renegotiate NAFTA

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the Trump Administration officially notified Congress that President Trump intends to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

"NAFTA has failed American workers and been a disaster for our environment. NAFTA has busted unions and created a race to the bottom in many industries - depressing wages here at home as corporations threatened to cross the border unless workers agreed to wage and benefit cuts.

If President Trump is going to turn NAFTA into a fair trade deal, he will need to address all those issues and work with the progressive Democrats who have fought for years for a trade policy that is fair to workers. I will be carefully monitoring the negotiations going forward to ensure that any new trade agreement improves the lives of American families and workers, not the pocketbooks of President Trump's corporate cronies."
