Rep. Trone Secures Nearly $550,000 in Funding for Frederick's Flood Mitigation Project in Government Funding Bill

WASHINGTON, July 1 -- Rep. David Trone, D-Maryland, issued the following news release on June 30, 2021:

Congressman David Trone (MD-06) announced that he secured $534,977 in funding for flood mitigation in Frederick, Maryland as part of the FY 2022 Department of Homeland Security funding bill. The Motter Avenue Area Community Flood Mitigation Project will protect homeowners from property damage and reduce the risk of flood-related injury in the YMCA Flooding Area.

Flooding is a common natural disaster and following a record setting hurricane season in 2020, it is more important than ever to update our infrastructure to be able to accommodate heavy rain and flooding. With this funding, the City of Frederick will be able to implement the recommendations of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for addressing flood risk. This includes new pipes and lines that will be able to carry more stormwater from upstream drainage areas without overflowing above ground. Additional inlets will ensure surface runoff makes its way into the sewer faster and more efficiently.

"Our infrastructure must be upgraded in order to keep up with 21st century challenges," said Congressman David Trone. "This funding will allow the City of Frederick to take precautions against the havoc that natural disasters can wreak, and make sure residents feel safe and protected in their homes and communities."

"Flood mitigation improvements are a priority for me and the Frederick community. Using the Army Corps of Engineers resiliency study recommendations, this investment will allow us to move even more quickly on our efforts."

Trone is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and single-handedly requested funding for this and other critical local projects earlier this year. Trone made these requests, otherwise known as Community Project Funding, in order to address the dire need for investment in local projects that will help lead to increased economic growth and job creation.

Congressman David Trone was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018 to serve the 6th District of Maryland, which includes all or part of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties.
