Potts Law Firm Comments on Deadline Extension for Filing Proof of Loss for Flood Damage

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has enhanced the flood insurance claims process and extended the time for policy holders to evaluate their losses and the adjusters' reports. The sixty (60) day proof of loss requirement has been waived and the deadline for submitting a complaint of Proof of Loss for Hurricane Harvey is 365 days (one year) from the date of loss.

The Proof of Loss claim, will help determine how much money a policy holder will receive for repairs. With the extension of the filing deadline, policy holders will have adequate time to evaluate their loss, have the damage surveyed by experts and get the Proof of Loss claim timely filed without rushing through the process. Also, the extended time will allow policy holders additional time to work with their supplemental claims, such as concealed damage uncovered when making repairs.

"An issue arises because a great number of homeowners and business owners are still actively involved in the recovery process as a result of contractor and supplier issues that typically follow a catastrophic event," said Derek H.
