OID approved in effort to make health coverage more affordable

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) received approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to transition to a State-based Exchange on the Federal Platform (SBE-FP), effective May 1, marking a major milestone in Oklahoma's efforts to help stabilize the individual health insurance market, make coverage more affordable, and expand choices.
"This approval marks an exciting step forward for Oklahoma and a significant milestone in our move toward a more state-directed health insurance market," said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready. "Establishing a state-based marketplace will give Oklahoma greater ability to address unique challenges facing Oklahomans, through local control of programs impacting consumers across our state."
For Oklahomans, enrollment will continue through HealthCare.gov for Plan Years 2026 and 2027. At the same time, OID will begin taking on key Exchange responsibilities like plan management, consumer assistance, and public engagement, to increase oversight of the market and provide more tailored consumer support.
"This transition positions Oklahoma to play a more direct role in shaping a health insurance marketplace that is responsive to the needs of Oklahomans," said Exchange Executive Director Ashley Scott. "Our focus now is on implementation and working with carriers, community partners, and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and clear information for consumers."
