NWYC Index Finds Small Business Owner Satisfaction with Congressional Action Doubles Following Tax Reform

Business Wire

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- National Write Your Congressman (NWYC), an organization that gives small businesses a voice in American government, finds in its Q4 2017 Quarterly Index small business owners’ satisfaction in Congress doubled following the passage of the new tax law.

“There is no surprise that our small business owners are overwhelmingly satisfied with government action in light of the new tax law,” said Randy Ford, President and COO of National Write Your Congressman. “The new law will allow our members to expand their businesses, invest in their employees and pay down debt. Our members know that they are being heard by their representatives in Washington and are optimistic about their business goals in 2018.”

The Index also found small business owners’ trust in Congress increased over the previous quarter. Trust in the President was slightly lower than the previous quarter, but more than half of small business owners surveyed still strongly trust the President.

The NWYC Index Score, which takes into account six factors measuring small business owners’ trust, hope and satisfaction towards Congress and government, was up from last quarter.

According to research from the Congressional Management Foundation, 55 percent of Congressional members state that it would take less than 10 constituent opinions to consider taking the action requested or changing their stance. More than half of small business owners surveyed agree their own elected members of Congress know their opinion on important issues.

“We know from research that the constituent voice matters and Congress listens. NWYC members regularly communicate with their members of Congress and know their opinion matters,” said Ford.

Small Business’ Plans for 2018

When asked what plans small business owners have as a result of the new tax law, many said they would be giving back to their employees or hiring additional employees, paying down debt, or putting money into savings.

Seventy-four percent of small business owners expect revenues to be higher in 2018 and more than half plan to use additional tax dollars to invest back into their business by purchasing additional equipment, inventory and materials.

With respect to their businesses, small business owners list regulation reduction as the top action that would directly improve their business in 2018, followed by health care reform or replacing the Affordable Care Act.

Although there are mixed feelings about small business owners’ trust in government as a whole, the majority of owners would vote for the same Representative and Senator again in 2018.

NWYC exists to provide members with non-partisan information and research along with the tools they can use to connect with their representatives in Washington and advocate for the policies and actions that will help their small businesses be successful for their families, their employees and their communities.

Methodology

NWYC’s Index on the Sentiment of Small Business Owners towards Congress is based on data collected using an online survey administered January 17-22, 2018. A total of 1,053 respondents participated. Respondents represent 47 of the 50 states in the U.S. Their businesses are small, with 59% employing 1-9 employees and 37% with 10-99 employees. The predominant industries represented are construction, services, automotive repair, health, legal, accounting, engineering, advertising, education, manufacturing, agriculture, and retail trade.
