Nebraska sheriff to surrender law enforcement license following plea agreement
North Platte Telegraph, The (NE)
Valley County Sheriff Casey Hurlburt has agreed to surrender his law enforcement license as part of a plea agreement for committing insurance fraud.
According to a plea agreement filed by the Nebraska Attorney General's Office on Tuesday in Valley County District Court, Hurlburt will surrender his license in exchange for no additional charges being filed.
Prosecutors also agreed not to seek jail or probation time during a sentencing hearing. Hurlburt was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to formalize the agreement.
Hurlburt agreed to plead no contest to providing false information in an insurance claim after a vehicle crash. The Nebraska State Patrol arrested Hurlburt in October on suspicion of fraudulent insurance acts, a felony that typically carries penalties of up to two years in prison, one year probation and/or a $10,000 fine.
Hurlburt filed a claim in January of 2023 regarding a crash that involved a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, according to the criminal complaint. The complaint accused Hurlburt of stating in his claim that the crash occurred on Oct. 11, 2022, instead of "the actual date of the accident," March 23, 2022, in order to receive full coverage of the repair costs. Hurlburt obtained full coverage on the vehicle in April of 2022 from State Farm Insurance.
The Valley County seat is Ord, located about 64 miles northwest of Grand Island.
