ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Aug. 8 -- The National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives issued the following statement by Executive Director Barbara Silverstone on the 61st anniversary of Social Security Disability Insurance:
"Today, we celebrate the 61st anniversary of Social Security Disability Insurance. We honor this great moment in history by supporting, strengthening and protecting Social Security.
"For six decades, the disability program has been protecting the American worker by providing essential financial support when he or she is most vulnerable. Rather than finding ways to destroy it, we need to come together to protect it. This shouldn't be a partisan issue. It is in our national interest that Social Security remain strong and solvent, and I urge members of Congress - Democrats, Republicans and Independents - to ensure its viability."
