March truly rolls in like a lion …

Daily Corinthian, The (MS)

Beware the Ides of March … the term comes from Roman times after the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15 by senators hoping to preserve the Roman Republic.

In the south the month of March brings a new level of concern much bigger than a full month, but the term "beware" has a whole new meaning.

It's tornado season and already the Crossroads area has had two confirmed tornados this season – an EF 2 in and near Ripley and another EF 1 near Ramer, Tenn. in McNairy County.

Rather bizarre high winds hit the Crossroads area on March 3 with wind gusts up to 50 m.p.h., uprooting trees and ripping metal roofs off buildings.

Trees fell on power lines, vehicles and houses, causing extensive damage.

March has truly rolled in like a lion.

As the entire U.S. moves into what could be another active tornado season, the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) encourages homeowners, renters and business owners to review their insurance policies and contact their insurance agent or company to discuss coverage options.

"With wind speeds that can reach nearly 300 m.p.h., tornadoes can be deadly and cause severe property damage," said Karen Collins, vice president of property and environmental for APCIA. "Tornadoes can occur rapidly and with little warning, which is why advanced preparation is very important. We encourage consumers to know the warning signals used in their community and be prepared to take cover when alerted. Maintaining an emergency storm kit with a radio, flashlight, batteries and first-aid items is the first step in preparation. Other steps include conducting tornado drills with your family and ensuring that your property is adequately insured.

During each of the last five years, the U.S. tornado count has exceeded the 10-year average and it is possible 2023 may be another active season. While every year is different, in 2022 the National Weather Service issued more than 2,300 tornado warnings and there was nearly $29 billion in insured losses due to tornado damage. 2022 was the third-costliest year for the peril behind 2020 ($38bn USD) and 2011 ($33bn USD) and it was the fourth consecutive year with more $20 billion in insured losses, according to the APCIA.

Most tornado, windstorm, hail and similar severe weather-related damage is covered by either homeowners, renters or commercial property insurance policies. Tornado damage to a home is covered by the "windstorm" peril under the homeowners insurance policy. Renters insurance can also provide coverage for policyholder possessions. Business owners are covered under their commercial policies. Protection from windstorm or hail damage for cars is available if people have purchased comprehensive coverage with your automobile insurance policy, said the APCIA.

"Insurers are strongly encouraging property owners to harden their homes and businesses to reduce potential loss and damage," said Collins. "In addition, during the current cycle of high inflation, policyholders are encouraged to make sure they have enough insurance and are financially prepared should disaster strike. This can be completed with a phone call to their insurance agent or company and then reviewing their policy coverage and considering potential optional coverage features."

APCIA pre-storm tips:

Conduct a detailed inventory of possessions including receipts, descriptions, and photos of the home's contents.

Keep the insurance policy and agent information along with other important information with you or in a secure place.

Keep a cell phone charged and with you for emergencies.

Keep a laptop computer or phone close by. Most insurance companies allow claims reports to be submitted via the Internet or over the phone.

Examine the outside of your home for lawn furniture, overhanging tree limbs and other items that could cause damage during a windstorm.

Consider installing impact resistant windows and reinforcing your garage door.

If anyone experienced a loss from a windstorm:

Immediately contact your insurance agent or company representative.

Inspect property and cars for damage.

Inventory losses and photograph damage and save related receipts to assist with claims handling.

Secure property from further damage or theft.

Check the background and legitimacy of repair contractors. Ask your insurance company for assistance in locating a reputable contractor.

Keep detailed records of business activity and extra expenses during the interruption period and prepare records to show the income from the business both before and after the loss.
