Letters: How about financial assistance for nursing home generators?

Palm Beach Post (FL)

Even today, after Dorian, a number of nursing homes or assisted living places still have no generators. That could be very expensive.

Since most of them accept Medicaid, why can't Medicaid or FPL or Florida's government pay for them?

Michael Paschkes, Boynton Beach

A Sept. 8 letter to the Post does not provide Post readers with a well-informed or professional argument by attempting to refute columnist Gail Collins' assessment of Donald Trump. ("Is Trump, um, slipping? Even more?" Aug. 31)

It suggests that Collins "bone up on personality traits" by citing Myers-Briggs to explain Trump. Myers-Briggs is used as a rather simple business and dating site survey for picking out personality types, but not for the serious task of identifying psychiatric disorders.

All knowledgeable and professional mental health practitioners know that it is the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) that is the recognized and standard source for identifying mental illness. The Fifth Edition of DSM is readily available online for a very modest price.

Interestingly, on the same day as the Sept. 8 letter, columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. cited an article by two psychiatrists who write about Trump's mental impairment. ("We are living the fable of the emperor's new clothes.")

Paul F. Brenner, Wellington

The article regarding a possible bankruptcy filing by Purdue Pharma to avoid ramifications from their part in the opioid crisis is reminiscent of the 1980s when AH Robins developed an intrauterine device that permanently sterilized more than 200,000 women when the device caused severe pelvic inflammatory disease and eventual death to many others.

AH Robins filed for bankruptcy protection to avoid being held accountable financially for the hundreds of thousands of lives ruined by their failed device. The following year they claimed an $8 billion profit.

Although AH Robins, the maker of many OTC drugs to this day, did nowhere near as much damage as the current manufacture of opioids, this should be an example that these billion-dollar companies not be able to take the money and run after destroying not only lives but families and entire communities.

This opioid epidemic truly was fueled by greed. They need to be held accountable.

Is denying that humans cause climate change the same as cargo cult science, except the deniers are those with the most cargo (material wealth) rather than the least?
