Letters: Donald Jr. speech at UF should spur outrage

Palm Beach Post (FL)

The University of Florida, a public university, funded by taxes paid by Florida residents, is planning to pay the son of the president, Donald Trump Jr., a man whose sole achievement in life is being the son of and a mouthpiece for his father, $50,000.

Where is the outrage? While I agree that the First Amendment should apply everywhere, especially in institutions of higher learning, I am not in favor of using my taxes for political hawking or book-selling.

If Donald Trump Jr. wishes to speak, he has every right to do so but not on my dime.

Ellie Schweitzer, Palm Beach Gardens

Editor's note: The Oct. 10 speech is being funded by student activity fees.

Frankel won't respond to

constituent's emails

My representative in Congress is Lois Frankel. I have sent many emails to her and other representatives. The subjects included anti-Semitism by some young members of Congress; infrastructure, an issue wanted by both parties, and the impeachment of the president.

The members other than Frankel said they would not respond to anyone outside their district. Frankel asks if you want a response to an email and I always say that I do, but she has never responded.

Perhaps it is because I am a registered Republican. Who knows?

Robert Freid, Boynton Beach

This time, vote for

intelligence, integrity

The Opinion and Other Views sections of Sept. 29 highlight the electorate's dissatisfaction with life in this threatened democracy.

Yes, our leader is ill-suited intellectually to the tasks required and many contenders are grasping for intelligent direction.

Impeachment has little chance of passing a Trump-controlled Senate. The censuring of Trump by congressional action seems a possible way to temporarily alleviate some problems with a poor leader choice but allowing time to regain control.

Congress needs to get on with meaningful legislative actions to undo or delay the senseless presidential rollbacks on the environment, healthcare and human rights.

So, 2020 voters, no hiding your heads in the sand this time around. Be counted. Vote for intelligence, honesty and integrity.

Harriet Pashman, Jupiter

Quit bashing young

climate activists

What is with the criticism of Greta Thunberg and the other young people who have the courage to speak out about the future of their planet?

Conservative host Laura Ingraham derisively refers to "the children of the corn." Others debate how they get around. It's virtually impossible for most people to go carbon-neutral immediately.

The world faces a threat to its very existence. If everyone would start making honest efforts to try and at least modify their behavior, then maybe Greta and her companions would at least stand a fighting chance.

Greg Brooks, Lake Clarke Shores
