Las Vegas man found guilty in insurance scam, aided by car dealer [Las Vegas Sun]

Apr. 23—A man was found guilty this week of an insurance scam, falsely claiming a car he owned had been stolen, with help from his girlfriend and a car dealer, according to a news release from the Nevada attorney general's office.

Jockamoe Shamus Hawley, 40, of Las Vegas was found guilty Thursday of one count of insurance fraud, a category D felony and was sentenced to one to four years in prison and ordered to pay $2,000.

"I hope this case serves as a warning to those who would consider doing the same," Attorney General Aaron D. Ford stated in the release.

Hawley made a claim to Progressive Insurance alleging the theft of a vehicle in good condition from his residence Dec. 20, 2007. Metro Police's VIPER Auto Theft Task Force had recovered the reported vehicle from a local residence with several other vehicles that had been reported stolen. An investigation revealed that the insured vehicle had been substantially damaged years prior to the claim and was never stolen, according to the release.

Hawley was assisted by his girlfriend, Ashley Nickole Laub, and a car dealer, Tony Raymond Canales of The Car Guys. Laub and Canales pleaded guilty to their involvement in the fraudulent scheme.
