Knowles announces bid for re-election

Republican Herald (Pottsville, PA)

Jan. 11--State Rep. Jerry Knowles, R-124, Rush Township, announced today he will seek re-election to the state House of Representatives.

In a statement Knowles released Friday, he said he will continue to focus on protecting taxpayers, enact policies to help grow the local economy and eliminate property taxes.

"I have always fought to protect the tax dollars of the residents of the 124th District," Knowles was quoted in the release. "Now more than ever, with the extreme liberals in Harrisburg and Washington pushing for higher taxes, the elimination of private health insurance and policies that hurt the economy and cost us jobs, I need to keep up the fight for taxpayers and our values."

Knowles said he worked to defeat a 16% personal income tax hike, cut more than $1 billion in wasteful spending from the state budget and voted against Gov. Tom Wolf's $2.1 billion gas tax.

"The people of Schuylkill, Berks and Carbon counties can't afford higher taxes and our small businesses can't take on more burdensome regulations," Knowles said. "Thanks to the leadership of President Donald Trump in Washington, the economy is improving and unemployment is at its lowest level across the nation in decades -- but there are radicals in Harrisburg who want to stop this economic growth before it reaches every resident in the 124th District. I'm fighting for them every day and will always work to get government out of their way."

Knowles said his number one priority continues to be eliminating the property tax system that hurts local schools, homeowners and senior citizens.

"The big spending liberals in Harrisburg and Philadelphia don't stand with the people of our community," Knowles said. "I will continue to push other legislators to support property tax elimination, so we can protect homeowners and seniors across the commonwealth."

A former proprietor of a retail grocery store in Tamaqua, Knowles also served the borough as a full-time police officer and later was a Schuylkill County commissioner. He was first elected to the House in a 2009 special election to fill the seat vacated by Sen. David G. Argall, R-29, Rush Township. He is married to the former Lorraine David, of McAdoo, for 46 years. They have two sons and two grandsons.
