Critics claim that Medicaid is inefficient, encourages "dependency" and drains state budgets. Yet Medicaid administrative costs are far lower than those of private insurance, and there is no evidence that the programs discourage work. The federal government covers between 50% and 78% of Medicaid costs, depending on the state, and while some critics argue that the federal share is unsustainable, the evidence shows that Medicaid remains one of the most cost-effective ways to provide healthcare to vulnerable Americans.
