Homeland Security boss: This time, we’re ready for hurricane
New York Daily News, The (NY)
Sep. 1--Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan insisted the feds are ready for Hurricane Dorian as the Category 5 storm neared the Bahamas on Sunday.
"The president is going to make sure that we're on the same page, that we're tracking this, and that we're going to be ready," McAleenan said on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos."
Earlier this summer, Deputy FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor told Congress, "We're probably short a few thousand employees."
But McAleenan said, "that has been fixed."
"We have 3,000 people already deployed across the federal government agencies for this storm," he added.
Last year, a FEMA report found the agency was woefully unprepared for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017, underestimating how much food and water FEMA would need, among other problems.
Asked about the flawed 2017 response, McAllenan said, "I can guarantee that FEMA and all of our federal partners are doing everything they can to support our state and local partners that manage and execute the emergency response."
President Trump on Sunday issued a stream of tweets and retweets about Hurricane Dorian's progress.
"Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever," he wrote. "Already category 5. BE CAREFUL! GOD BLESS EVERYONE!"
