Greensboro law firm discloses data breach dating back to July

The Greensboro immigration law firm of Chapman & Roberts PA has disclosed a data breach that occurred in July. The firm said an undisclosed number of individuals may have had certain personal information hacked.

Information grabbed in the breach includes first and last names together with one or more of the following: date of birth; driver's license number; Social Security number; passport number; government identification number; medical information; health insurance information; and/or financial account information.

The notice was posted on the law firm's website Thursday. Law enforcement has been notified of the data breach.

The firm said its network disruption "affected our ability to access certain systems."

"In response, we promptly initiated an investigation, engaging third-party specialists to assist with understanding the nature and scope of the disruption," the law firm said.

"Through the investigation, it was determined that that certain information within our systems may have been subject to unauthorized access on or around July 4."

The firm said it took until May 1 to provide notice in order to "review the potentially affected data, identify individuals potentially affected and confirm the associated information."

The firm is providing affected individuals with access to credit monitoring and identity protection services.

The law firm is at least the 17th corporation or healthcare system with Triad ties to experience a data breach or hacking incident in the past two years.

In November, the Bojangles' restaurant chain informed the N.C. Attorney General's Office that nearly 87,000 North Carolina customers are affected by a data breach that includes such personal information as name, Social Security number, medical information and IRS pin numbers.

The filings do not indicate whether the breach involves employees or customers or whether it involves in-store purchases or the chain's app. The breach was discovered March 12.

Truist Financial Corp. informed customers in October they may have been affected by another data breach via the Feb. 14-26 hacking of a third-party debt collection agency.

Others hacking targets include:

UnitedHealthcare, AT&T, Ticketmaster, Truliant Federal Credit Union, HanesBrands Inc., Center for Creative Leadership, Bank of America Corp., VF Corp., Atrium Health, Novant Health Inc., the parent company of Golden Corral restaurant chain, and Pepsi Bottling Ventures LLC.
