Gentry Mountain Mining Under Fire Due to Recent Allegations

[email protected]Sun Advocate

Allegations against Gentry Mountain Mining LLC., located in Huntington, Utah, recently surfaced regarding health insurance, 401(k) and child support; or rather the lack of. It was learned through confidential communications that several individuals confirmed that even though health insurance, 401(k) and child support was being deducted from their paychecks, they were completely blindsided when medical bills and past due child support notifications began to roll in. Those employees would soon find out that for several months them and their families were without health insurance, leaving many of them paying out of pocket for medical and dental expenses.

Several of the men who spoke up wished to remain anonymous and will be referred to as Employee #1, Employee #2 and Employee #3.

Employee #1, who was recently let go from Gentry Mine, reported that from November 2024 until February 2025, insurance premiums and child support payments had been deducted the same as they have been in the past. However, after a few denied medical bills and denied fishing licenses, employees quickly learned that their insurance premiums and child support payments were not being sent out.

Employees were quite upset to learn that not only had they received no notification of their lack of insurance coverage but they also had continued paying for that nonexistent coverage. Several employees reported never being informed they no longer had health insurance, even though insurance premiums were being deducted out of each check.

Employee #2, advised that during the month of January, two of his young children suffered from separate medical issues. Unbeknownst to him, there was no insurance coverage, leaving him with well over $20,000 in medical bills.

Employee #2 also shared that it wasn't until he was denied a fishing license, that he was notified that the child support being taken out of his checks hadn't been being submitted to the Office of Recovery Services (ORS), and he wasn't the only one whose child support payments never made it to ORS. Two of the employees affected have reported that Gentry Mine has since submitted payment to ORS for the missing child support payments. This same employee alleged that upon receiving his last paycheck he had been shorted a few hours and still had insurance premiums deducted.

Employee #3 explained that he had a small child requiring medical insurance and another child on the way, which forced the family to seek alternative coverage for his fiancée. This employee also reported that he didn't realize he didn't have any benefits until he received a bill from his dentist for the full balance due to there being no dental insurance.

Employee #1 advised that there were several employees, including himself, who were recently laid off in the first week of April, each of which received several different reasons as to why they were being laid off. Some were told that their position was being terminated, while others were told that there simply wasn't enough money to continue paying them.

Many of the workers that we spoke to advised they allegedly hadn't received any documentation about being let go, rather a phone call in the middle of the night or no explanation at all.

When asked, Employee #1 advised that when his direct deposit hit his bank account a week early is when he realized he had also been laid off. Employee #1 stated that he asked several individuals trying to confirm being laid off and it wasn't until he was able to track down Shain Stoddard, CEO for Gentry Mining, that he was able to receive confirmation that he had in fact been laid off.

When asked about the health insurance allegations, Reynolds stated that he had no direct knowledge and had only heard rumors. Regarding paycheck deductions, he explained that he had recently taken on the role of mine manager and had not yet been eligible for benefits. Reynolds advised that the best person to speak to regarding the allegations being made, would be Stoddard.

Upon speaking with Stoddard, it was advised the call was to discuss the allegations brought to the attention of ETV News. Stoddard asked that the allegations be elaborated on. It was advised the current allegations that have been brought to light were that many employees were having insurance premiums, child support and 401(k) being deducted from their checks, but insurance premiums were not being paid, child support was not being sent to ORS and 401(k) was not being invested.

Stoddard would not confirm or deny the allegations, advising he would like to provide a proper response to said allegations to be sent via email. When asked for a response, the CEO of Gentry Mine provided the following statement:

Stoddard released the following statement,

"At Gentry Mountain Mining, we take the well-being of our employees and the trust of our partners and community very seriously. Like many businesses in the coal industry today we had faced economic challenges that required a reduction in workforce, during this period there were disruptions in our medical coverage, 401(k) contributions and child support."

"All issues regarding 401(k) contributions and child support deductions have been fully rectified, and we've worked closely with the appropriate agencies and financial institutions to ensure all funds have been correctly allocated.

"In regard to our medical coverage, Gentry has committed to covering all valid medical expenses incurred by employees during the lapse in coverage. We are currently finalizing a new insurance plan to ensure this situation is addressed. We've been transparent with our team about this process and remain committed to earning their trust every day.

"Additionally, we are taking comprehensive steps to improve internal systems, increase financial transparency, and strengthen compliance. Our team is resilient, and we are committed to honoring every obligation to our employees, vendors, and the families that depend on us.

"We appreciate the continued support of our workforce and community as we work through these challenges with integrity and transparency."
