Flood waters can pose health threats with potential sewage runoff and overflow from bodies of water that may carry bacteria such as E. coli and viruses such as hepatitis.
Flooded basements are another possibility with heavy amounts of rain. In the event of a flooded basement, be sure to turn off gas and electricity before entering the basement to lessen risk of injury.
If entering the flooded area, be sure to wear rubber gloves and waders or boots and to cover any open sores or cuts with adhesive bandages. Avoid flushing toilets, as the contents could end up in the flooded basement.
Any food or drinks that come in contact with flood water should be thrown out. Residents may want to take pictures of damages for insurance purposes.
