FDIC Joins the Federal Reserve and Conference of State Bank Supervisors as Sponsors of Oct. 3-4 Community Banking Research Conference

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

ST. LOUIS, Missouri, Sept. 19 -- The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis issued the following news release:

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) is joining the Federal Reserve and the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) in sponsoring the annual Community Banking in the 21st Century research and policy conference. The sixth annual conference, which brings together community bankers, academics, policymakers and bank supervisors from around the country, will meet Oct. 3-4 at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

The conference features the latest in community banking research and will be webcast live both days. Featured speakers will include:

* Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Loretta J. Mester, who will deliver the opening keynote on Oct. 3 at 1:15 p.m. CT;

* Federal Reserve Vice Chairman for Supervision Randal K. Quarles, who will give the second day's keynote address at 8:15 a.m. CT;

* CSBS Chair and Mississippi Department of Banking and Consumer Finance Commissioner Charlotte Corley, who will speak on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. CT; and

* FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams, who will give the first-day closing remarks at 5:15 p.m. CT.

The livestream can be viewed starting Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. CT via the conference site at https://www.communitybanking.org.

Other Speakers

Gerard Cuddy, president and CEO, Beneficial Bank, Philadelphia, Pa., will deliver the evening keynote address on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. CT. Other guest speakers will include Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard and CSBS President and CEO John Ryan.

Research Paper Sessions, Moderators and Discussants

A total of 11 academic papers were chosen from this year's call for papers by the conference committee. Authors of the selected papers will present their research during one of three moderated panels held throughout the conference. The panel sessions are divided into three topic areas, with each panel including a community banker discussant and an academic moderator.

* The first research session and panel will focus on small business lending. The moderator will be Gregory Udell, Chase chair of banking and finance at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. The community banker discussant will be Janet Garufis, chairman and CEO, Montecito Bank and Trust, Santa Barbara, Calif.

* The second session and panel, on the topic of competition in banking, will be moderated by Dr. Timothy Koch, distinguished professor emeritus, department of finance, University of South Carolina. The community banker discussant will be Gilda Nogueira, president and CEO, East Cambridge Savings Bank, Cambridge, Mass.

* The third session and panel, on the topic of bank management and performance, will be moderated by Elizabeth Kiser, associate director and economist, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The community banker discussant will be Thomas Hough, CEO, Carrollton Bank, Carrollton, Ill.

National Survey Release and Panel Discussion

On day two of the conference, representatives from CSBS and the St. Louis Fed's Community Bank Research and Outreach office will present the results of the 2018 National Survey of community banks and state roundtables conducted earlier this year by state bank commissioners across the country.

The results will be discussed as part of a panel moderated by Paul Davis, editor of the Community Banking bureau at American Banker. The panelists will include:

* Trevor Dryer, co-founder and CEO, Mirador Financial, Portland, Ore.

* Kate Hao, founder and CEO, Happy Mango, New York

* Trey Maust, co-founder and executive vice chairman, Lewis & Clark Bank, Oregon City, Ore.

CSBS Community Bank Case Study Winners

This year's conference also will feature a presentation from students at Eastern Kentucky University, the winners of the 2018 CSBS Community Bank Case Study Competition.
