Bloomfield-based health care giant Cigna plans to lay off 2,000 employees worldwide

The Cigna Group, one of the world’s largest health insurers and pharmacy-benefit managers, has confirmed that it plans to lay off approximately 2,000 employees.

Bloomfield-headquartered Cigna intends to carry out the downsizing by the end of this month, company officials said this week. They declined to list the locations or positions of the affected workers, who will comprise less than 3% of the company’s global workforce of more than 60,000 people. But they indicated that the job cuts would have a limited impact in Connecticut, where more than 3,000 employees are based.

“As we drive greater efficiency across our business, we have made the difficult decision to reduce roles in our workforce,” Cigna officials said in a written statement this week. “This decision was made with deliberate care and focus, and we are providing a package that includes a variety of transition services for impacted colleagues. We expect that Connecticut-based roles will be a very small percentage of those impacted.”

A message left Friday for Bloomfield Mayor Anthony Harrington that inquired about his response to the layoffs was not immediately returned.

Cigna officials did not allude to any layoffs when they held their latest earnings call, on Feb. 5. Last year, the company produced revenues of about $275 billion, up 11% from 2024, and a profit of about $6 billion.

“In the context of a very dynamic operating environment in 2025, we delivered competitively attractive results,” David Cordani, Cigna’s CEO and chairman, said during the call. “I’m proud of how our team works tirelessly, each and every day, for the benefit of those we serve.”

Based on its annual revenues, Cigna perennially ranks as the highest-ranked Connecticut-based company in the Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. corporations. Last year, it placed No. 13.

Cigna is one of many large companies that have announced or made layoffs in recent months — a trend that reflects a number of factors, including the growing impact of artificial intelligence, reversals of hiring surges in previous years and economic uncertainty. Among other companies operating in Connecticut, CVS Health informed state officials last week that it planned to lay off more than 300 remote employees, including 17 Connecticut residents, who report to its offices in Hartford, where its Aetna health-insurance business is based. Last month, Macy’s told state officials that it planned to lay off nearly 1,000 employees at its fulfillment center in Cheshire and about 60 employees at its distribution center in South Windsor, and close both of those facilities.

Among other recent developments at Cigna, the company announced last week a settlement of a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that alleged its pharmacy-benefits business had artificially inflated insulin prices. The company did not admit any wrongdoing or liability, and it will not pay any fine. But it agreed to make a number of changes, which are expected to reduce patients’ out-of-pocket drug costs by up to $7 billion during the next 10 years.
