Elkhart police seek shooting suspect

Goshen News (IN)

June 27--The Elkhart city police department is searching for a suspect in a June 20 shooting on Fifth Street in Elkhart.

According to police, Leon Howard Tyson, 27 is a suspect in the shooting death of Tommie Lee Strowder, 38.

Tyson is 6'0", 180 pounds and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Elkhart police ask that if the public knows of Tyson's whereabouts or any information about the murder to contact them immediately at 574-295-7070.

Runaway horse and buggy crashes into car

A driver was injured after her vehicle was struck by a runaway horse and buggy on U.S. 20 Friday afternoon.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department, Christopher Strong, 48, Strugis, Michigan was westbound on U.S. 20 in a 2004 Ford Taurus when his vehicle was struck by the runaway horse and buggy.

The horse and buggy was reportedly headed south along CR 250W when it came on to U.S. 20.

Strong's injuries were not listed in the sheriff's department report.

Failure to report

--Staff at the Elkhart County Work Release facility, 201 N. Cottage Avenue, told Elkhart County police Friday that inmate Luis Rosario, 32, failed to return to custody Thursday at 10:10 a.m. He is considered AWOL.

Crash reports

--James Jack told Elkhart County police Friday that at 5:35 a.m. he was involved in a property damage crash on U.S. 6 at C.R. 43 in Syracuse. The other vehicle left the scene of the crash and was reported to be a tan sedan operated by a female.

Arrest made in burglaries

Two Warsaw men have been arrested on burglary charges by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

According to police Jonathan Dale Kuta, 38 and Thadius Jacob Kuta, 20 were arrested following a call of a burglary in progress at a barn south of Pierceton on C.R. 400S.

Police said that through their investigation they were able to connect the Kutas, who are uncle and nephew to several burglaries. Police said recovered items from the burglaries will be returned to the victims.

The Kutas were booked into Kosciusko County Jail.

Theft/burglary reports

--Anthony Greenfield told Goshen police Thursday that his moped was stolen from his residence at 412 Westfield Avenue, Goshen at 5 a.m.

--Anna Baer told Goshen police Thursday that her bicycle was stolen from the Kauffman dorm at Goshen College, 1700 S. Main Street on Monday.

--William L. Moore told Elkhart County police Wednesday that his blue 1997 Ford Expedition was stolen from his home at 65863 Barrens Drive, Goshen, sometime between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Assault/battery reports

--Timothy Depping, 20, was arrested by Goshen police Friday at 2:41 a.m. on charges of strangulation and domestic battery at 409 E. Madison Street, Apt. 3. He was taken to Elkhart County jail.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

--An employee at Myers Trust Real Estate told Goshen police Thursday that their building, located at 2809 Ferndale Road, reported damage to their building on June 3.

--Staff at Jefferson Community Church, 58915 Ind. 15 told Elkhart County police Friday that someone burned and melted frisbees on the roof of their pavillion between June 18 at 6 p.m. and Monday at 3 p.m.

Traffic arrests

--Dustin G. Sparks was arrested by Bristol police at 12:30 p.m. Thursday on Elkhart Road in Bristol on a charge of driving while his license was suspended.

--Andrew E. Matney, 29, of 7611 N. C.R. 550E, Rochester, was arrested by Goshen police Friday at 12:59 a.m. near 2304 Lincolnway East on a charge of being a habitual traffic offender.

--Ernesto Rodriguez Castro, 26, of Ligonier, was arrested Sunday on C.R. 700S, east of C.R. 200W on charges of never receiving a license, no insurance and speeding after he was observed going 67 mph in a 45 mph zone on a motorcycle.

Drug/alcohol arrests

--Michael Dean Miller, 19, of Shipshewana, was arrested on a chrage of minor consuming alcoholic beverages Sunday on C.R. 500N east of Ind. 5 in Shipshewana. He was taken to LaGrange County jail.

--Jose Rangel-Baustista, 23, of 1602 Hickory Place, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police Thursday at 1:40 a.m. on a charge of possession of marijuana in the area of Wilden Avenue and Greene Road.

Leaving the scene of property crash

--Tony McWilliams of North Liberty reported that his truck was damaged by another vehicle and the driver failed to stop and report the collision at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The crash occurred in the parking lot at Goshen Middle School, according to Goshen police.

--Rodney Clark reported a single vehicle crash on Ind. 119, west of C.R. 19 in Goshen at 11:56 p.m. Tuesday, according to Elkhart County police. The driver of the vehicle left the scene after running the vehicle off the road and crashing into a utility pole and a street sign. An investigation is still ongoing at this time, police said.

DUI/OWI arrests

--Derek Renfrow, 27, of Bristol, was arrested Wednesday at 11:37 p.m. by Bristol police on a charge of operating while intoxicated in the 400 block of Mottville Road.

--Bristol police responded to a 9-1-1 call at 302 S. Apollo, Bristol, at 4:22 p.m. Tuesday. Caitlyn A. Thomas, 24, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication, resisting law enforcement and intimidation. She was transported to the Elkhart County jail.
