DIXON COUNTY, Neb. -- Dixon County property owners have 90 days to provide additional information before an update to the county's Flood Insurance Rate Map is completed.
The new map will provide updated flood risk information and tools that can be used to enhance local mitigation plans and help local officials and residents make decisions about reducing flood risks and buying flood insurance. The mapping project is part of a nationwide effort led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to increase local knowledge of flood risks.
"During the past couple of years, the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources has been working closely with community officials throughout the county to make sure we have the most accurate picture possible of the local flood risk. This information will ensure that homes and businesses are insured appropriately against flooding, while also helping communities make more informed decisions about how to protect against what might otherwise be devastating flood events," Jamie Reinke, NeDNR Floodplain Management Division manager, said in a news release.
The new map is a preliminary version. Anyone who sees incorrect information in the map can submit a written correction or comment. Residents also can appeal findings. Appeals must be submitted through the local floodplain administrator. For more details on the process, visit www.fema.gov.
Visit https://msc.fema.gov/ to view the preliminary flood insurance rate map. For questions, contact a map specialist at 1-877-336-2627 between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. For additional information, contact the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources at (402) 471-2363.
