COVID-19 pandemic forces El Paso Fire Department's 9/11 memorial ceremony to go online
El Paso Times (TX)
The El Paso Fire Department's annual remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be closed to the public this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year's ceremony will be livestreamed online at 9 a.m. Friday on the EPFD Facebook page.
The public is asked to share its photos and tributes on social media with the El Paso Fire Department, which will select and share some of the images.
Friday marks 19 years since the terrorist attacks that killed more than 2,977 people, including more than 400 firefighters and law enforcement officers, when hijacked airliners crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The El Paso remembrance is closed to the public due to health safety restrictions because of COVID-19, which has killed more than 450 people in El Paso and more than 190,000 in the United States this year.
