Open enrollment for health insurance available now for Mendocino County residents

MENDOCINO CO., 11/13/24 – Open enrollment for health insurance via Covered California is open now through Jan. 31, 2025.

Under the Affordable Care Act, California residents are eligible to renew or shop around for health insurance coverage for 2025, said Covered California, the entity that operates the state's health insurance marketplace.

The program is used primarily by individuals that don't have insurance through their place of business or the self-employed. Many immigrants and refugees also use the program.

This year, the program offers new opportunities for low-income residents to ensure health care coverage.

All Californians with incomes over 200 percent of the federal poverty level ($30,120 for a single person or $62,400 for a family of four) are eligible to enroll in a special plan with no deductibles and reduced out-of-pocket costs called the Enhanced Silver 73 plan.

Another new program will lower generic drug prices and copays for medical visits and other reduced costs.

For the first time ever, DACA recipients will also be eligible to enroll in insurance through Covered California.

Over 1.8 million Californians are currently enrolled in Covered California insurance plants, said the marketplace.

Mendocino County falls under the region one marketplace, which also includes 21 other Northern California counties. According to Covered California, over 58,600 individuals have insurance through the marketplace in region one.

According to Jessica Altman, executive director of Covered California, the results of the national election will not impact the enrollment process. "The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act remains the law of the land, and the election results do not affect the financial assistance available to enrollees through federal and enhanced state subsidies next year," she said, "the most financial assistance ever offered to Californians to help pay for health care coverage remains available for 2025."
