Council to revisit rules on temporary housing

Victoria Advocate (TX)

Nov. 20--The city of Victoria is looking to make it easier for residents to live in recreational vehicles while their homes are being repaired after Hurricane Harvey.

The hurricane caused widespread damage throughout the city, forcing residents to live in hotel rooms or seek shelter with family members. In response, the City Council is planning to discuss whether to waive some rules dictating how long people can live in temporary housing such as RVs.

"If someone has a home that's damaged, they could bring in, temporarily, a mobile home," city spokesman O.C. Garza said.

If approved, the ordinance would allow people to live in RVs for up to 18 months if they are repairing home damage from Hurricane Harvey, according to city documents.

This comes as some Victoria residents could qualify to get manufactured homes or RVs from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Those housing units are aimed at providing temporary housing for residents as they rebuild homes or find new ones.

Also Tuesday, the City Council is planning to consider whether to lease golf carts for the Riverside Golf Course. The golf carts would cost about $4,300 each month, according to city documents.

Another proposal would allow the city to lease turf equipment for about $7,800 each month.

"Those are not your regular lawn mowers," Garza said.
