Casa Cornelia Law Center receives award

Jan. 12--PHOTO -- North County's Amnesty International Chapter awarded the Vista based nonprofit Casa Cornelia Law Center with its 2018 Digna Ochoa Human Rights Defender Award of the year. The award recognizes an outstanding human rights hero or group for dedication to protecting human rights in the North County community. The nonprofit law firm has helped more than 300 North County community members seeking human rights protections in 2018. Oriental painting class starts Jan. 23 at center

The Carlsbad Senior Center is offering a new class on Oriental Sumi-e Painting beginning Jan. 23, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Artists use rice paper, Sumi-e ink, ink stone and brushes. All levels are welcome. Materials list is available online or at the senior center front desk. Fee is $52.20 for residents and $58 for nonresidents. The Carlsbad Senior Center will offer a free "Amazon's Alexa Products" talk from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday for ages 50 and older at 799 Pine Ave. Instructor Mike McMahon will explain voice-controlled devices. Computer classes offered for seniors

The Foundation for Senior Care sponsors a series of computer classes and workshops taught by volunteer computer technicians, starting Monday at the Crestview Estates Clubhouse, 1120 E. Mission Road. Six classes are offered: Smartphone & Tablet (Androids), iPad & iPhone, How Do I Decide -- Computer vs Tablet vs Phone?, Google Maps, Using WordPad, and Solving Spreadsheet Problems. Two-hour workshops will be offered Tuesday and Friday for $5 each. Classes cost $10-$40. Palomar Health offers a number of flu shot clinics in North County. Upcoming clinics include: 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Jan. 31 at Palomar Medical Center, Escondido, 2185 Citracado Parkway; and 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 29 at Palomar Medical Center, Poway, 15615 Pomerado Road. Volunteers sought

to help prepare taxes

Interfaith Community Services is looking for volunteers to help needy community members prepare taxes through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The program runs at community centers in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. Training is offered. Email [email protected].

Free fitness program for cancer survivors

North County Cancer Fitness offers a free fitness program for community members affected by cancer. Classes are led by certified instructors and are held at EOS Fitness, 780 Garden View Court. Classes range from gentle boot camp and kickboxing/weight training to gentle Zumba, mat Pilates and gentle fitness. There is also a walking group. In addition, gentle restorative yoga is offered at One Minute Cannabist, 3041 Industry St. Newcomers must complete a consultation form at northcountycancerfitness.org and provide a release form signed by their physician. Center provides free services for seniors

Rancho Bernardo Senior Services, 16769 Bernardo Center Drive, Suite K-14, offers various free services for senior citizens, such as preparation of income taxes, financial planning, legal appointments, hearing tests, Medicare enrollment, care placement and funeral planning. Brass concert set for Sunday at church

Seachange Brass will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito, 1036 Solana Drive. The newly formed brass ensemble will perform a variety of music from Bach to bebop. The ensemble features Frank Glasson on trumpet, Tim Saeger on trumpet, Rachel Trumbore on trombone, Brian O'Donnel on bass trombone and Matt Pennington on French horn. Spots still left for whale-watching trip

Vista's Culture Caravan has a few seats left for "Thar She Blows," a whale-watching trip to Newport Beach. The excursion is slated to include views of blue, finback, gray, humpback, and minke whales along with several species of dolphin. Lunch at Newport Landing in Newport Beach is included.
