Canada Takes the Driverless Car Torch from California

PR Web

(PRWEB) February 25, 2016

Now that Toronto allows autonomous cars to be road tested, Ontario has officially taken up the 'driverless vehicle' torch from California. To discuss the state of autonomous testing and its impact on motor insurance, TU-Automotive are bringing together 3 of the foremost experts in the area. Speaking on the panel will be Toronto City's General Manager for Transportation, Stephen Buckley, the Insurance Bureau of Canada's Policy Director, Barbara Taylor, and Canada's Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence's Executive Director, Barrie Kirk.

Gareth Ragg, Managing Director of TU-Automotive, called the panel "A unique first time insight into one of the biggest upcoming disruptors to the insurance industry – autonomous cars." Citing the panellists' "close proximity to the topic" as "a chance to start the discussions with insurers that will create the future of the self-driving car insurance proposition".

Information on the panellists:

Stephen Buckley. Stephen Buckley serves as the General Manager for Transportation Services for the City of Toronto. In that capacity, Steve oversees the City's surface transportation network, including: sidewalks, cycling infrastructure, roads, bridges, and traffic signals and signs, as well as the City's public realm, street furniture and street art program. Steve and his team have been leading the effort to prepare the City of Toronto for the coming world of autonomous vehicles.

Barbara Taylor. As Director of Policy for Ontario, Barbara leads the development and execution of briefings, position papers and submissions to ensure industry interests and positions are represented. Key interests include: Ontario auto and property, government relations, and advancing technologies including the autonomous car, the sharing economy and telematics.

Barrie Kirk. Barrie has been a consultant since 1982; his projects over the last few years have focused on autonomous vehicles, connected vehicles, automotive infotainment, traveller information services, real-time traffic information, and vehicle use surveys. He currently acts as Executive Director for CAVCOE.
