Burley woman hit by SUV still critical

Times-News (Twin Falls, ID)

Oct. 28--BURLEY -- A Burley woman who was hit by an SUV Monday during a rainstorm Monday is still in critical condition and undergoing surgeries, her mother said.

Altera Starr Moore, 40, was struck by Melissa Rae Wodskow, 34, of Heyburn near the intersection of 16th Street and Parke Avenue around 9 p.m.

Moore was taken to Cassia Regional Medical Center and then flown to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, where she remained in intensive care Friday.

Moore received numerous injuries including a tear in an artery, fractured pelvis, back, neck, wrist and arm along with a head injury. She has remained in an induced coma since the first surgery to repair the artery.

Moore's mother, Debbie Moeller of Rupert, said Friday that Altera underwent another surgery Thursday night.

A Gofundme account has been set up to help the family with medical expenses at http://bit.ly/2eHHqJJ.

"She is extremely critical," Moeller wrote in a message to the Times-News. "Doctors placed a drain in her head to monitor pressure on her brain and a filter was put in to catch a blood clot that has formed in her leg. She also has a drain to relieve pressure from bleeding around her spinal cord. Both of her hip sockets are "very damaged."

"She has several more surgeries to go," Moeller wrote. "They are hoping to get movement back in her legs."

Moeller said the doctors planned a tracheotomy on Moore Friday.

"She knew I was there and she knew her name and where she was born," Moeller said of Moore soon after she was hit. "She apologized to me and asked if she was going to die. I told her no."

Moeller said Moore has some mental challenges and doesn't drive but she lives independently.

"She walks where ever she goes," Moeller said.

Moore was walking north on the roadway in a rainstorm wearing dark clothing when she was hit, witnesses said.

Wodskow, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Durango, was arrested by Cassia County Sheriff's deputies after the incident because her license had been suspended for failure to carry insurance. She was issued a misdemeanor citation for driving without privileges.

An arraignment hearing is set for Nov. 14 in Cassia County Magistrate Court.

Wodskow said she was driving south when she realized she had hit something and heard "...a bump."

She told officers that she was going the speed limit, 25 mph.
