Feb. 28--LEVEL CROSS -- An electric heater is being blamed for a mobile home fire Monday evening.
According to Chief Steve Russell of the Level Cross Fire Department, a call came in at 5:34 p.m. Monday to report a fire on Smokewood Road between Level Cross and Randleman.
Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the back bedroom of the mobile home, Russell said.
There was one adult with three children at home watching TV when they saw smoke coming from the bedroom.
Although there was no other fire damage to the rest of the home, smoke damage was heavy, Russell said, adding that firefighters had the fire out within 30 minutes.
Russell estimated that the 14-by-70-foot mobile home was about 30 years old and contained three bedrooms. It was located by itself on a tract of land.
The residents were renting the home and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, Russell said, but the owner had no insurance.
Asked if the mobile home was salvageable, he said it was about a 50-50 possibility. He did say most of the residents' belongings not in the affected bedroom were salvageable.
