Break-in at former Ramada results in $100K in damage
Aberdeen American News (SD)
June 22--Three people have been charged with burglary and intentional damage to property following a June 13 break-in at the former Ramada Inn that resulted an estimated $100,000 in damage, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
Numerous people entered the building, at 2727 Sixth Ave. S.E., and damage included graffiti and flooding, according to a news release.
The flooding was caused by shutting off the breaker that controls sump pumps, both Aberdeen Police Department Capt. Eric Duven and co-owner Trevor Lien said. It resulted in approximately a foot of water in the basement.
Lien said damage was discovered at the unoccupied building because the owners check on the property weekly.
Tyler Zachary Marsh, 20, of Aberdeen and two juveniles have been charged, while charges are pending against others, according to the release.
Duven said the exact number of people who will be charged is unknown as interviews still need to be conducted, and the investigation is ongoing.
Lien said he believes the property was only covered by liability insurance, which will not cover the damages.
In April, three juveniles were arrested and charged with misdemeanor simple assault following a fight behind the former hotel. As a result of both incidents, "We'll increase patrols around the building," Duven said.
