Aflac Veteran of 43 Years Phillip “Jack” Friou to Step Down

PR Newswire

COLUMBUS, Ga., June 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Aflac, the leader in voluntary insurance sales at the worksite in the United States, announced today that J. Brian Angel; vice president of State Government Relations, will replace long-time Aflac veteran Jack Friou, who will step down as the head of the Government Relations team effective July 1. Mr. Friou will remain with the company through the end of the year as a senior advisor.

"Jack has been a fixture at Aflac for more than four decades. In that time he has worked in a variety of positions and with regulators across the country to ensure that the company's interests were represented honestly and fairly. Jack knows Aflac inside and out and his contributions will be sorely missed," Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos said.

About Mr. Angel, Amos said, "Brian has been with Aflac for 25 years and we are confident that he will step into this new role and continue to represent Aflac's interests with state legislatures and regulatory agencies as Jack has done so well throughout his tenure with the department."

Aflac Executive Vice President and General Counsel Audrey Boone Tillman added, "While we will certainly miss Jack Friou's contributions, we are extremely fortunate to have an outstanding replacement in Brian Angel. Brian has been preparing for this position for the past 25 years. He has the respect of his team and of regulators across the country. We are confident that he will seamlessly move our program forward without interruption."

Brian Angel received his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined Aflac's Legal Department in 1992 after earning his juris doctor degree from the University of Texas School of Law. In 1996 he was promoted to second vice president, regulatory counsel, and transferred to Albany, New York, where he assumed day-to-day responsibility for Aflac New York's legal, regulatory, and government relations matters. In 2001 he relocated back to Columbus to serve as Aflac's privacy officer. In 2003 he joined the Government Relations department as counsel and was promoted to his current position in 2006. He is a member of the state bars of Texas and Georgia.

Jack Friou, senior vice president; director of Governmental Relations, joined Aflac in 1973 and has served in various capacities in administration, marketing and government relations. He also served as president of Aflac New York. Jack graduated from the University of Georgia in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in political science and served in the Army for two years.
