COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) _ Aflac Inc. (AFL) on Monday reported third-quarter net income of $1.6 billion.
The Columbus, Georgia-based company said it had profit of $2.53 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were $1.23 per share.
The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.22 per share.
The insurer posted revenue of $4.82 billion in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $4.62 billion.
Aflac shares have climbed 12% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has declined 19%. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $65.11, a climb of 21% in the last 12 months.
