Winners Crowned at Kansas Junior Livestock Show (Long Version)

WICHITA, Kan., Sept. 23 -- The Kansas Livestock Association issued the following news release:

Auction premiums and scholarships were just a few of the benefits for youth who participated in the 82nd annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS), September 19-22 in Wichita. The event featured 715 contestants from 89 Kansas counties showing 1,428 head of cattle, hogs, sheep and goats. Major sponsors of the show were the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA), Kansas State University and the Agri-Business Council of Wichita.

A 1,322 lb. Maine-Anjou shown by Ellis High School senior Baylee Werth bested a field of 110 head to earn grand champion steer honors. Werth's steer was purchased by Coonrod Construction, Elanco Animal Health, Ford County Feedyard, Kansas Feeds, Jim Maddox-State Farm Agency, State Farm Foundation, Dodge City Veterinary Clinic and Micro for $11,552 during the Auction of Champions held at the show's conclusion. The reserve grand champion steer, shown by 17-year-old Shilo Schaake of Westmoreland was a 1,336 lb. crossbred worth $8,924 to Westway, Competitive Edge Genetics, Bill DeVore, Bank of the West, Coonrod Construction and the Drovers syndicate.

The reserve Maine-Anjou steer was owned by Lauren Aust from LaCygne, with Ben Jensen of Courtland leading the reserve crossbred. The champion Angus steer was exhibited by Taylor Goering of McPherson. An Angus steer shown by Cale Hinrichsen of Westmoreland claimed reserve. The Charolais division champion was exhibited by Taylor Goering of McPherson. Baylee Werth of Ellis showed the reserve Charolais. Blane Steckline of Garden Plain led the champion Chianina, with Grace Aust of LaCygne owning the reserve. The champion Hereford was exhibited by Ty Ellerman of Effingham. Morgan Gaines from Newton showed the reserve Hereford. Jake Nikkel of McPherson owned the champion Shorthorn steer. The reserve Shorthorn steer was an entry from Jaxson Mead of McPherson. The champion Shorthorn Plus steer was led by Trenton Goering of McPherson, with the reserve being exhibited by Jace Bachman from Lakin. Blair Vohs of Bucyrus owned the champion Simmental steer. Jara Thorp from Burlington showed the reserve Simmental. In the all other breeds division (AOB), Sarah Loomis of Council Grove owned the champion steer. Emma Lehman of LeRoy entered the reserve AOB.

Fourteen-year-old Ben Nikkel of McPherson led a Chianina to the supreme champion breeding heifer title. Reserve supreme champion went to a Simmental Percentage heifer exhibited by 11-year-old Abby Wood of Leavenworth. There were 251 heifers entered in the show. The reserve champion Chianina was exhibited by Layton Ediger from Minneola, with Taylor Goering of McPherson exhibiting the reserve Simmental Percentage. Addison Gauthier of El Dorado owned the champion Angus heifer. Reserve went to an Angus entry shown by Madison Ratliff of Westphalia. Jaid Runft of Scandia led the champion Charolais heifer, while Josi Schrader of Wells showed the reserve. Andrew Hodges of Lebo exhibited the champion Charolais Percentage heifer. Jake Nikkel of McPherson led the reserve Charolais Percentage. In the Gelbvieh division, Grady Hammer of Wallace led the champion and her sister, Gabrielle Hammer, followed with reserve. Brooke Jensen from Courtland exhibited the Hereford champion, and Wyatt Durst of Morrowville showed the reserve. In the Limousin division, Tanner Walden of Tonganoxie showed the champion heifer, while an entry led by Logan Wilson of Osawatomie received reserve honors. A heifer owned by Kaylee Gum of Pittsburg was chosen as Lim-Flex champion. Maycee Ratliff of Westphalia exhibited the reserve Lim-Flex. In the Maine-Anjou division, champion heifer was shown by Hayden Pine of Lawrence, with Britt Michaelis from Paxico exhibiting reserve. The champion MaineTainer heifer was owned by Luke Prill of Wichita, and Addison Gauthier from El Dorado led the reserve. The Red Angus heifer champion was shown by Anna Behrens of Norwich, with Ty Montgomery of Coats leading the reserve.

Jake Nikkel of McPherson owned the champion Shorthorn heifer. Tayler Bacon of Powhattan exhibited the reserve Shorthorn. Luke Prill of Wichita led the heifer that took champion in the Shorthorn Plus division, and Cole Hanna of Wichita exhibited the reserve. The champion Simmental was led by Taylor Goering of McPherson, with Blair Vohs of Bucyrus showing the reserve. The AOB champion was shown by Hadley Schotte of Marysville. Dalton Hilt of Louisburg owned the reserve AOB. Layton Ediger of Minneola displayed the champion commercial heifer. The reserve commercial heifer was presented by Taylor Nikkel of Maple Hill.

Hadley Schotte of Marysville took the champion senior cattle showmanship title. Reserve champion was claimed by Taylor Nikkel of Maple Hill. Rounding out the top five, in order of finish, were: Ben Nikkel, McPherson; Madison Loschke, Kingsdown; and Blair Vohs, Bucyrus. In the junior cattle showmanship division, Tanner Walden of Tonganoxie was the champion, while Eva Hinrichsen of Westmoreland claimed reserve. Rounding out the top five, in order of finish, were: Sydnee Shive, Mt. Hope; Ashley Ward, Paola; and Garrett Walden, Tonganoxie.

Abby Lillard of Talmage guided her 285 lb. dark crossbred to the grand champion market hog title. S.O.W. Corporation of Wichita paid $6,375 for her entry during the premium sale. A 264 lb. dark crossbred owned by Dawson Wuthnow from Manchester was reserve grand champion hog of the 240-head show. MOJACK of Wichita placed a bid of $3,040 on Wuthnow's hog. The champion Duroc barrow also was shown by Abby Lillard from Talmage. Andrew Anderson of Caney guided the reserve Duroc. In the Hampshire division, an entry from Brody Nemecek of Iola earned champion honors, while Ainsley Corwine from Quenemo exhibited the reserve. Hayden Bachman of Meade showed the champion Yorkshire barrow. The reserve was owned by Cooper Wuthnow from Manchester.

An entry from Seth Burroughs, Williamsburg, earned champion honors in the dark AOB division, while Kylin Newberry, Attica, exhibited the reserve.

Danielle Nading from Fort Scott guided the champion light AOB. The reserve light AOB was owned by Ely Burroughs of Williamsburg. The champion light crossbred was shown by Lakyn Pettijohn of Cedar, with Jack Gilliam from Washington exhibiting the reserve.

A Hampshire owned by Brody Nemecek of Iola was named supreme champion in the 93-head gilt show. For the second consecutive year, Tyler Goetzmann from Gardner exhibited the reserve supreme, a Duroc. The reserve Hampshire gilt was shown by Kyser Nemecek from Iola, with Jack Gilliam of Washington owning the reserve Duroc. Alex Ptacek from Russell exhibited the champion Yorkshire gilt. The reserve Yorkshire was guided by Jenna DeRouchey of St. Marys.

Jaxon Pitts of Fort Scott guided the champion dark AOB gilt. The reserve dark AOB was exhibited by Harrison Bachman from Meade. In the light AOB gilt division, Ryann Allison of Fort Scott presented the champion, with Alex Cannady from Ottawa showing the reserve.

Gabryelle Gilliam, Washington, took the champion senior swine showmanship title. The reserve champion senior was Chisum Grund of Wallace. Rounding out the top five, in order of finish, were: Caitlin Dreher, Iola; Dakota Ferguson, Williamsburg; and Alex Ptacek, Russell. In the junior swine showmanship division, Hayden Bachman, Meade, was the champion, with James DeRouchey, St. Marys, named reserve champion. Rounding out the top five, in order of finish, were: Abby Lillard, Talmage; John Fritts, Emporia; and Brooklyn Hilton, Howard.

Shilo Schaake from Westmoreland exhibited the grand champion market lamb, a 140 lb. entry from the crossbred division, which brought $4,114 from Farm Bureau Financial Services during the Auction of Champions. The reserve grand champion market lamb, a 144 lb. crossbred, worth $3,430 to Southwestern Remodeling of Wichita, was shown by Blake Foraker of Burrton. A total of 259 lambs was shown. Allison Whitebread of Abilene led the champion Dorset lamb.

An entry led by Judd Nelson of Soldier took home reserve honors. The champion Hampshire lamb was owned by Gabryelle Gilliam of Washington. Dandi Thomas of Richfield led the reserve champion. Kaci Foraker from Burrton exhibited the champion in the natural division, while reserve went to a lamb from Mindi Holloway, Yates Center. Claiming the title of champion Southdown was an entry from Taylor Coen of Elkhart. Raylee Faris of Westmoreland displayed the Southdown that took reserve. Cassidy Hill from Marion owned the champion Speckled lamb. Reserve was awarded to an entry exhibited by Jace Nelson of Soldier. Shilo Schaake of Westmoreland also led the champion Suffolk lamb, while an entry from Kaylee Toews, Leonardville, took home reserve honors. The champion AOB lamb was owned by Jordan Weseloh, Yates Center. Reserve went to an AOB entry from Reilly Stewart, Baldwin.

A Hampshire owned by Holly Swearingen of Lawrence earned supreme champion purebred ewe, beating out 53 other entries. The reserve supreme champion purebred, also a Hampshire, was exhibited by Jace Nelson from Soldier.

Dillon McNickle of Mound Valley owned the champion Dorset breeding ewe.

Allison Smith from Emporia showed the reserve Dorset. Jansyn Van Horn of Garfield owned the champion Montadale breeding ewe. Joel Nelson, Soldier, led the champion Shropshire, while Jansyn Van Horn of Garfield owned the reserve. Elliott Smith, Emporia, exhibited the champion Southdown ewe. Cody Coen, Elkhart, showed the reserve. The champion and reserve Suffolk breeding ewes were shown by Taylor Coen of Elkhart. The champion ewe in the AOB division was led by Judd Nelson of Soldier, while the reserve was displayed by Dillon Knepp of Lincolnville.

An entry from Dillon McNickle of Mound Valley bested 131-head to take supreme champion honors in the commercial breeding ewe show. The reserve supreme commercial ewe was owned by Erin Falkenstien of Oswego. Cassidy Hill from Marion led the champion yearling commercial ewe. Taking home reserve yearling was an entry from Mindi Holloway of Yates Center.

In the senior sheep showmanship division, Blake Foraker of Burrton was named champion. Taking reserve was Kaci Foraker, Burrton. Finishing out the rest of the division, in order of finish, were Gabryelle Gilliam, Washington; Holly Swearingen, Lawrence; and Logan Allen, Gardner. Abigail Dickinson of Gorham won the junior sheep showmanship division. Jillian Keller of Piqua took home reserve honors. Following the top two winners, in order of finish, were Hayley Belt, Kingman; Kayla Belt, Kingman; and Kennedy Coffin; McLouth.

Twelve-year-old Jillian Keller of Piqua received grand champion honors with her entry in the meat goat show. The grand champion goat, besting 206 others, weighed 81 lbs. and was worth $2,070 to friends of Hugh Nicks. Kaci Foraker of Burrton showed the reserve grand champion meat goat, which weighed 78 lbs. Jim Maddox-State Farm Insurance placed a final bid of $2,123 on her goat.

Lisa Geis, Durham, showed the supreme champion commercial doe kid. Her entry bested 80 others to claim the honor. Raylee Faris, Westmoreland, exhibited the reserve champion doe.

In the senior division, champion goat showman honors went to Blake Foraker of Burrton, with Jason Paine from Hutchinson claiming reserve. Following the top two in the senior division, in order of finish, were: Kaci Foraker, Burrton; Caitlin Dreher, Iola; and CeAnn Greeson, Kismet. In the junior division, Raylee Faris of Westmoreland received champion honors, with Luke Falkenstien from Oswego earning reserve. Following Faris and Falkenstien, in order of finish, were: Laiten Greeson, Kismet; Brody Nemecek, Iola; and Jaysie Schoenfeld, Oakley.

Prior to the Auction of Champions, KJLS presented $20,100 in scholarships to 13 exhibitors. Those receiving $2,000 awards were: Aubrey Davis, Scott City; Sam Davis, Madison; Jason Paine, Hutchinson; and Shynia Peterman, Lyons. Mitchell Duer, Onaga; Courtney Jackson, El Dorado; and Bailey McKay, Marysville, each were awarded $1,700. Receiving $1,500 stipends were Michael McKinney from McPherson and Madison Rickabaugh of Wilmore. Bailey Corwine, Quenemo; Riley McGinn, Sedgwick; Deana Pearson, Burlington; and Mackenzie Riffel, Abilene, each received $1,000 scholarships. Since the inception of the KJLS scholarship program in 1993, a total of 281 exhibitors have been awarded $368,700.

A team from Oklahoma State won the senior college competition in the Mid-America Classic Judging Contest, held in conjunction with KJLS. Second place went to a team from Texas Tech. Blinn College won the sophomore division in the junior college contest, with a team from Fort Scott Community College winning the freshman division. Teams from Butler Community College finished second in the sophomore and freshman divisions.

In addition to KLA, K-State and the Agri-Business Council of Wichita, dozens of volunteers help organize and put on the show.
