Top Caravan Club Certificated Location Site Owners Honoured at Westminster Awards Ceremony

Certificated Locations are small, 5 pitch, privately-owned informal sites, numbering over 2,500, which are found right across the UK, often in remote rural settings, on working farms, beside pub gardens, and even in the grounds of stately homes. CLs are for the exclusive use of Caravan Club members, almost a third of who cite access to the CL network as their main reason for joining.

The Caravan Club CL of the Year Awards are presented at the House of Commons in recognition of the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act (1960) which enables The Caravan Club to grant certificates to landowners to operate CLs.

The roll call for the CL of the Year Awards, as voted for by Caravan Club members during 2010, is as follows : -

1st Jeremy and Sharon Haworth, Manor House Park CL, Blackpool
2nd John and Beryl Edwards, Bron Derw Farm CL, Llanrwst, Conwy
3rd Glynn and Val Wiggins, Old Granary House CL, Green Hammerton, York

This is the second time in three years that Manor House Park CL, at Marton Moss, just outside Blackpool, has taken top honours in these national awards; and this beautifully tended site was also voted the ‘Most Picturesque Site CL’ on the network.

CL owners Jeremy and Sharon Haworth took over the site in December 2007 and have never looked back, investing in facilities for their guests and welcoming them all year round to this fascinating part of Lancashire.

"We never realised just how many people are attracted to Blackpool," said Sharon. "We’re very lucky with our location here – it’s a great base for the bright lights and buzz of Blackpool, but also for the quieter resorts nearby, and we’re only an hour from the Lake District."

The runner up in the national awards, Bron Derw Farm CL, in the Vale of Conwy on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, has been in the Edwards family for 33 years. A working sheep farm on the outskirts of the pretty market town of Llanwrst, John and Beryl Edwards took over the running of the caravan site 15 years ago. Again their commitment to providing for Caravan Club members’ comfort and adding to their enjoyment of the area has been rewarded with recognition in these awards.

Owners of the third place, Old Granary House CL, near York, Glynn and Val Wiggins, are relatively newcomers and it’s therefore a remarkable achievement for them to receive a national award in only their second year of running the site. With lots of local support, not least from their neighbours, they have created a gem of a site and also run a B&B business which is much appreciated by the non-caravanning friends and relatives of members staying on the CL.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Caravan Club Chairman, Grenville Chamberlain, commented: "The Caravan Club’s CL network is a tremendous resource for our million caravanning members to enjoy, and I’d like to thank our national winners receiving their awards here today. We appreciate the welcome the CL owners extend, and also the care and investment that goes into running these small sites. Not only that, CLs are a boon for local tourism economies across the UK and account for a significant proportion of the annual offsite spend of over £400 million by our members."
